5 agra - jaipur
6 jaipur

8 phuskar - chittorgarh
9 chittorgarh - udaipur
10 udaipur
11 udaipur- mount abu
12 mount abu - ranakpur

Is this too much to cover in three weeks? Should we skip or ad cities and should we book the hotels in advance?

Looking forward to your comment

3 nights in Delhi is normally enough so you could do 1 at the start and 2 at the end. No need for the night stay in Chittor, you can just visit en route (hope youre driving around). Add a night at Jaipur, one at Udaipur and 2 at Jaisalmer. You could also consider -
Deogarh in place of Pushkar
Manvar Resort at Dechhu in place of second night at Jodhpur
Gajner for night stay at Bikaner
Alsisar in place of Mandawa

Too many places.

You really do need to discard this Itinerary and start again.

I suggest you look in the Itinerary forum of the Rajasthan forum for some ideas and consider using a few overnight trains to save time.

People would find it easier to advise you if you mentioned the time of year you're planning the trip, how you intend to travel and your budget.

This is our first trip to India. Our plan is to arrive in Delhi around 15 October and hire a car.

Since October is peak season should we book our hotels (4 star) in advance and the car?

Our 20 day Rajasthan trip went like this...

Hi Chandramukhi,

We just completed our first trip to India in March. We traveled mostly via train and also had 20 days. This is what we did; maybe it will help you in your planning.

01 Arrive in Delhi
02 Delhi
03 Delhi- Agra by TRAIN
04 Agra
05 Agra - Fatehpur Sikri - Bharatpur by TAXI
06 Bharatpur
07 Bharatpur - Sawai Madhopur by TRAIN
08 Sawai Madhopur - Kota by TRAIN
09 Kota
10 Kota - Jaipur by TRAIN
11 Jaipur
12 Jaipur
13 Jaipur - Bikaner by TRAIN (overnight)
14 Bikaner
15 Bikaner
16 Bikaner - Jodhpur by TRAIN
17 Jodhpur
18 Jodhpur - Delhi by TRAIN (overnight)
19 Delhi
20 Depart Delhi

Most train rides were two hours or less, except the overnight trains and Bikaner to Jodhpur was about 6 hours.

We traveled independently but I did book all of our trains and hotels in advance. The taxi ride and other local transport was arranged on site.

If I had to plan it all again I would leave out Kota and spend more time in the National Parks (Bharatpur and Sawai Madhopur). I was sorry we had to miss Udaipur and Jaisalmer but with our limited time we were very happy with what we experienced. Our trip was great and I am looking forward to returning to India.

If you're looking to trim down your number of destinations I think most people choose either Bikaner or Jaisalmer. (Jaisalmer fort gets rave reviews but for us the five other forts we saw on our trip were enough ). They both are desert towns with similar possibilities as far as sightseeing. We choose Bikaner as it was less travel time for us and we wanted to see the Karni Mata temple.

If you want to see photos from our trip they can be found at www.wolfstad.com/photoalbum.

Good luck with your planning.

Depending on your budget, it may be best to send your itinerary to a good travel agent and ask them to organise hotels, cars and even the details.

That's what we did last year, were lucky to have an excellent knoledgeable travel agent.

In case you need it, I will be happy to send you the contact details of our agent.
