One night of luxury? Recommendations? Forts and Palaces?

Actually - 2 or 3.. Our budget should allow for us to have 2 or 3, maybe even 4 nights in relative luxury on our way around Rajasthan (depending on how much I spend shopping!) - I'm not talking $500/night here or Holiday Inn or Lake Palace. More like 5000 - 7000 rupees in a fort or palace!!!!! I've already discounted the palace at Phalodi, which looked great, but on researching more I found it was not worth the money....

Anyone have a recommendation? There are so many of them I don't know where to start....which are the picks in your opinion? Ideally, it would be one a little off the track and not in a major centre, so we could get to see some of the countryside and a bit of a different feel and a bit of a special experience. We are travelling with a 12 yo boy.

Jaisalmer!

If I were 12, I'd want to stay at this place:

Why visit a fort museum when you can spend the night in a (fairly reasonably priced) turret of a real fort!

In the circuit of Rajasthan I did last year, Jaisalmer is the one tow I tell people to not miss. Definately worth a two night stay. Go for an evening camel ride. Walk around the town, which is really outside of the main gate of the fort, check out the marketplace. Friendly people. Prices go up on the day the Palace on Wheels rolls into town.

The Lake Palace for a suite is only 300 USD or so and decidedly leass for the small rooms. The guidebook India Chic has a lot of choices..

Should have said - we're already booked in Udaipur, Jodhpur and Jaisalmer... And we're going at peak season - and in Udaipur for NYEve - I doubt there's be any cheap rooms then! But thanks... did you stay in any others...Neemrana? We'll absolutely be having a meal or two on that roof terrace though!

Khamaghani.

I have recentley come across a magnificent Fort of Sardargarh. enroute Udaipur-Pushkar(ajmer) wonderfull upcoming property. The tariff seems not too bad and related to your budget .
Their web address is www.sardargarh.in
I had friends staying here and had said good things about the place and mangment.

Looks lovely doesn't it - I've emailed them and asked for the tariffs as they don't seem to be on the site. Thanks - this is exactly what I needed!

Castle Bijaipur is well recommended by quite a number of folks I have spoken to - it is en route between Chittaurgarth (can't spell this sorry!) and Bundi. Also a place called Bassi between Agra and jaipur - and Neemranah Fort and Khimsah are others that come to mind.

We're really doing a full circle from Udaipur to Udaipur - so anywhere would be good, we're booked for one night at Ghanerao between Udaipur and Joodhpur, although its not up in the class of these others I think!
It's just that they all look fabulous, but as I discovered with the Phalodi one, they don't all deliver!

I think both those places would be up on the top of your list - Neemarana is often used by 'bigwigs', celebrities, fashion designers, film stars etc. for functions and staying. It is frequently in the news as the location for some celebrity do - weddings, fundraisers etc. I will PM you about the other.

I've stayed at Neemrana and would highly recommend it. Its fantastic. You can spend hours wandering through 'discovering' little bits of the place. Go up to the roof with a drink and watch the sun set over Rajasthan - magical.

Do watch for monkeys though - Neemrana is known for them. Don't leave your window or door open or any belongings outside your room.

Neemrana is a little on the expensive side, I've narrowed it down to Castle Bijaipur and Kesroli Hill Fort -which is also part of the Neemrana group, but cheaper -around 5000/night. Anyone stayed in both? or either?
