Not so expensive Fort/Palace hotels in Rajasthan

Are there any moderately priced (around Rs 5000/night) Fort/Palace hotels in Jaipur, Jodhpur and Jasisalmer? I'm planning to take my parents to a few places in Rajasthan and would love to have then stay at a few "heritage hotels".

We have a night at Ghanerao Royal Palace between Udaipur and Jodhpur - its near Ranakpur and Kumbalgarh.. it's 3500/night for 2 adults and a child in an extra bed http://www.ghaneraoroyalcastle.com
We also have 2 nights booked at Castle Bijaipur - near Udaipur - its 7000/night - but I went a bit mad and booked the Royal Suite!!!! its near the end of our trip and is our big splurge... mainly because when I asked them to describe the different rooms he replied that the Royal Suite would 'make us feel so very royal' - how could I resist! http://www.castlebijaipur.com/

Jaisalmer - there is Narayan Niwas Palace - atmospheric but rooms often not so good; also Nachana Haveli - I think the pick of all heritage properties here. Also, Mandir Palace parts are good, but new rooms totally lacking in atmospere. Jawahar Niwas Palace is also good, more expensive than Mandir in all ways - for value for money, right in the middle of town (Gandhi Chowk) yet set back from hustle and bustle I would go for Nachana Haveli.
Agree re Diggi Palace - great garden surroundings, in nice area. But don't go for budget rooms - these are not so good.
Ajit Bhawan is probably one of the nicest 'heritage' properties in Jodhpur - Umaid Bhawan is very expensive and not as old I think. It was the last palace built in India.

Umaid bhawan was completed in 1930's, and was the largest private residence in the world when it was completed.

I hope people know that it was under construction for many years and employed around 20,000 people. This palace was constructed due to drought in the area, people had no means to survive and to give them work Maharaja got this palace made...

That's interesting Shashank - and now below the palace there is a new exclusive colony being built for the 'gentry' as I and my friends were informed in Feb. when we drove around it for a look - my friends were appalled at the plastic roof living quarters of the poor workers adjacent, and the utter squalor of their lives. That was all the living quarters were - a sheet of propped up plastic on the bare earth.

Hi, we just returned from Rajasthan. :-(

If you are looking for a nice Heritage Hotel "off the beaten Track", I can recommend Roopangarh Fort next to Kishangarh.
Nice place, helpful staff, good food, huge rooms amd a very charming village with friendly people arround.

Also nice, in Shekawati Region, is Alsissar Mahal in Alsissar. Beautiful rooms, nice evening dinner setting and extreme friendly staff. Is is a quiet place, good to relax with a nice pool.

Very special is Pokaran Fort, near Jaisalmer. At daytime a lot of indian visitors for the temples and tourgroups for lunch, but at night quiet. Nice brand new pool with jacuzzi, very charming owner and a lot to explore. The village is nothing special and best choice is to rent one of the huge suites...

Killa Bahwan in Jaisalmer is realy something special, but maybe not the kind of old "heritage" you are looking for.

Greetings from Cologne
Ingrid

Have just met a traveller who also stayed in Pokoran Fort - thoroughly recommended it. Also said the restaurant was good. From the outside I have thought it didn't look up to much, but evidently inside it is marvellous. So I have added it to my list of places to lunch en route to Jodhpur - in fact will go there when I come back from Delhi around 12th December or so! Killa Bhawan, whilst it is in the Fort, it is not an isolated building standing on its own. The whole Fort is a heritage construction.

I must remember to stop here between Jodhpur and Jaisalmer - sounds nice for lunch or tiffin....except we wanted to go via Osiyan - is that two different directions? How long does that drive take Aishah? Should we do the detour, or just the more direct route?

just checking the map Kristin - it is not a lot further via Osiyan, one day I intend to go that way, and also I think Kichen, which is not marked on the map,is interesting for the Siberian cranes and may be nearby? Looking on map there is a turnoff at Bhikankor which will bring out before Dechhu. It comes into the direct road at this point. You may be lucky and pass Manvar Resort in which case do stop for the toilets and the chai!! Also nice food there.. But I honestly don't know if your road comes out before or after Manvar. I'm driving to Jodhpur on the 6th so will try and keep an eye out and see whether it does.

We stayed at Bissau Palace in Jaipur - nice, quiet, great food and very affordable. Unfortunately we missed our train and never made it to Krishna Prakash Heritage in Jodhpur which is meant to be even nicer; just marginally price-ier.

My blog link describes the hotel/haveli better and has direct links to the hotel.
