No Trains available between Jodphur and Jaisalmer as of Dec. 21, 2001
According to a times of India article (article posted on "Current World Crisis" thread under "troop movement in Jaisalmer"), "the
Northern Railway has stopped issuing tickets for the Jodhpur-Jaisalmer passenger trains to civilians. The army authorities are in close touch with railway administration for making the trains available for transport of troops and arsenals." Busses are available on this route, but wanted to pass on the info to help others plan . . .

What a Pity!
Looks like I just made the cut. Took the overnight train to Jaisalmer to spend a few days there and returned to Jodhpur on the 18th. It was a very pleasant, relaxing, (and cheap) overnight ride.
Incidentally, Jaisalmer seemed to me to be almost tourist-free. Good for the traveler, perhaps, but the local travel industry is hurting big time. Still, a very interesting place to be in these times of trouble. I watched the Parliament shootings live on the TV set of the Top Deck Cafe (off Gandhi Chowk). It made for a very lively discussion with the locals about what should happen next. Didn't see all the troop activity that Steven Ber has since reported from Jaisalmer, but did note constant flow of jet fighters and interceptors overhead from the nearby air base and saw several tanks moving in the direction of the Pakistan border. |
