Nagaur Cattle Fair - Rajasthan

If not off the beaten track Nagaur has very few references anywhere. A little piece in the guide books and not a great deal on here. Not a bad thing in my eyes. The less the tourist presence the better. But I wondered if anyone on India Mike has actually been there and what the experience was like. Dates for the fair vary between 12 - 20/2/13 and 17-20/2/13. Uk date structure so it's in Feb 13. We are getting into town from Bikaner and wondered if, like most towns when the festival pitches up, we would have trouble finding somewhere to stay. I have had the devils own job trying to book somewhere. We used to roll into town armed with the guidebook and just go find somewhere. Now the internet has made me soft: but it's no use here. Have been in touch with one hotel but they wouldn't book without advance payment and we could not find a money transfer option that suited us both. So, would appreciate any shared experience of Nagaur and the fair.

Ramdeo Cattle fair is very popular, just not so amongst the slice of tourist segment that carries a King James version of the Travel Bible Why so ? because each state has a cattle fairs; and Camel fair has more cache. The Nagaur fair is colorful and also great occasion for many farmers to strut out their bulls. It is also known for selling dairy products and fried snacks. You should be reserving your space nearby because the accommodations are scarce and sparse.

Thanks, sounds great. On the e mail notification I got you say you can help with hotels in Bikaner. Do you mean hotels in Bikaner or you are in Bikaner and can help with hotels in Nagaur? I don't imagine hotels in Bikaner being a problem but in Naguar, not so sure.

I disagree with the previous poster completely on this point. It is true that Nagaur is a small city and not geared up for tourism in a big way but traveling back and forth from a major city doesnt make sense if you're attending the fair. There are hotels such as Khimsar fort in Nagaur and last time we were there (in october last year), the fort proper was being converted to a hotel. In the worst case you may opt to stay at Phalodi (55 kms away) that has a good welcomeheritage lalniwas hotel that runs around 3000 or higher per night.

You may want to indicate your budget here for better advice as well.

You actually hit upon an existential dilemma Google & Internet has made one into a frog in the well The world outside a website, and email or a phone number does not exist, or if it does; not worthy of consideration.

I will admit that I have not been in that area in many moons, but if one reached a couple of days early, one could find accommodation. I agree with vaibhav, your budget would be critical. You could find places outside town, if you had car with driver.

Once upon a time, not too distant past, I had a similar experience on matters of advanced payment, but with a twist. The Haweli had my local cell phone number, weeks later, the owner called on the date of travel, to extend the invitation. The familiarity and fluency of the language, and dialect led the owner to waive advance payment in the last minute

Staying out of town is not an option. According to the guide there is the Hotel Baskhar and Hotel Mahaveer (at which I have a tentative booking but I imagine it may not be there when we turn up.) I also found a Shree Ganga Singh Palace, who don't answer e mails, Khimsa Fort, Aditiya, Sujan, and heera panna, which is a bit out of town. I'm sure there are others that don't appear on the web searches. Somehow we will stay in Nagaur.
