Must see places in Rajasthan-off the tourist trail
I will be riding my motorcycle around Rajasthan for 2 weeks in early January. Because I will have more mobility than most tourists I was looking for must see places that the tour busses and trains do not stop. Those neat out of the way places that not everyone sees.
I just saw a post about Bundi, which looks good but my planned itinerary is Jaipur, Pushkar, Jodhpur, Jaisalmer. So Bundi is a bit out of the way. Let me know some place you loved in Rajasthan. Thanks in advance |

well Ocoeeg
having just been through the Raj for 2 weeks, two or three places come to mind UDAIPUR with it's lakes and city palace are a must and just north of there over an incredible mountain road is Ranakpur with it's Jain temple. Just 40 kms. west of Agra which has it's Taj, there is Fatehpur Sikri which is one hell of a temple complex. We meet a couple of Dutch guys biking the world, their web site might be worth checking http://erikentjeerd.waarbenjij.nu/ good luck to you |

I agree with Paulie90, especially about Ranakpur. You'll struggle to keep your eyes on the road, especially the last half of the drive from Udaipur, because the scenery is so beautiful. And the main Jain temple is beyond spectacular.
Fatehpur Sikri, the Mughal capital abandoned after just a few years, is a fascinating "ghost town." |

My favorites:
If you want to see nice temple: Osiyan and Rat Temple near Deshnoke. If you want to spent some money "off the beaten track", try 2 nights at Chattra Sagar. (best food, very romantic, lot of birds, village walk) If you want to be away from everything in a non-rajasthani architektural hotel, try Sardar Samand near Jopdhpur. If you want to see an unspoiled village with a nice heritage hotel try Roopangarh or Kuchaman. Not a very nice village, but a nice Fort-Hotel has Porkaran near Jaisalmer. |

Pokoran Fort Hotel also rcommended to me as a non-touristy type place to stay. Ranakpur is a must even if you don't make it to Udaipur - and also around there are some nice places to stay - I stayed at Shivika on the little lake and that was not pricey and very pleasant. With your bike you can go out into the desert areas around Jaisalmer but you have to have permission to go beyond Sam or Khuri.
Permission also necessary for Desert National Park, unless you are an Indian National and have Indian Passport - then you can go anywhere
