Lunch at Udaipur Lake Palace

Dear all,

Did anyone recently try to have lunch at Udaipur Lake Palace? My friend tried to book a table via e-mail but was told that it was only available for their residents? is that true?

Did anyone try to walk-in for the meal or else then? You know, what i want is to have a visit of the Lake Palace.

Thank you so much!!!

I lunched there in '99 and chose some pakoras and a cup of tea off their very expensive menu. However, I think this is correct, because I have heard they are stopping casual visitors like this. I know they used to have a minimum charge if you went there for dinner (the minimum very pricey)but I think that may be stopped too. One of our Udaipur members may be able to be more specific.

A few times I visited Udaipur I always ate there at the lake palace although I didn't stay. The buffet at the hotel next to the city palace was damn good. Try their Lal and safed mansh. Lamb cooked in red and white gravy.

A better option

We found a better and much cheaper option than dining at the Lake Palace. There is a little restaurant called the Ambrai (part of the Amet Haveli hotel)which has good food, is modestly priced and has an even better view than the Lake Palace. It is on a spit of land which juts out into Lake Pichola only a few hundred metres North of the Lake Palace. The outdoor restaurant has unrivalled views of both the Lake Palace and the City Palace all lit up and reflected in the water. We went there twice and there is no need to make a reservation! Good luck.

Did you eat any Rajasthani delicacies there?

Not sure

The restaurant serves a few Western dishes but mainly Indian. I'm afraid I don't know which dishes are Rajastahni and which are from other parts of India. All I know is that I ate the Indian food and it was very good. I have just had around 40 meals during our tour so I can,t honestly remember what we had there, but I went back the next night! I don't like food too spicy and they were happy to tone it down but I found that dhal is good, so is paneer (a strange mild cheese)which appears in many dishes and pakoras make a good snack.

Yes, there are Rajasthani dishes (gutta curry etc.) also Continental choices as well - it's a great restaurant, Normski, isn't it? We ate there for lunch and another time at night, where we saw shadows of dancers performing at the Lake Palace plus some fireworks as well. It was quite entertaining, and certainly a lovely location.

Those who inquired, were all inquiries by email?

If I really wanted to do something like this I'd try to do it on the phone if email didn't work. I'd call from home, and I'd call again when I was in Udaipur. If that failed, I'd see if someone at the hotel where I was staying, like a manager (or concierge, but I haven't stayed in that kind of place in India) could help me make a reservation.

God bless you, I thought I was having Alzheimers because I remembered doing so. Thanks for getting back on this! Have a great boat trip. If you have small children and business is light the boatman will take you around and back and forth to the glee of the little ones..

We had lunch at the Ambrai a few weeks back. This place has a unique location in all of Udaipur. It has outdoor seating under the trees. It abuts into the lake at the level of the Ghats, and directly across are the city palace and the lake palace. Beer is served. The food is fine, a bit over-priced. The service is fairly pathetic!
