Logistics of travel Chittaurgarh - Bundi - Chittaurgarh

I am planning to visit Bundi, after reading all enthousiastic reviews here. I will go from Udaipur to Chittaurgarh (taxi or bus), because of the lack of trains from Udaipur. From Chittaurgarh I have to go to Ajmer (because we have to go Jaipur - Delhi). Now I want to go to Bundi for a day or so, but do not know what is the best way to get there (train, taxi or bus). Does anyone know what would be the best option? And could we travel through to Ajmer (Pushkar) from Bundi, or do we have to go back to Chittaurgarh (we are on a tight schedule)?

Also, anyone know a nice hotel in or around Chittaurgarh? I read a post on Bijaipur, stating that it is the worst...

Thanks in advance!!

The Chittaurgarh-Bundi train was painfully slow when I took it; we stood still for hours in the desert. Next time, I'll be on a bus.

>Chittaurgarh
I stayed at a place right opposite the train station, which was shitty. I cycled the 2km from there into the lower town where there seemed to be a few better places (not so noisy and dirty).
Renting a bike is a great way to visit the fortress by the way, it's a slow climb up, but once you're there you can see all corners.

I don't know what your price limits are, but we stayed in Bassi at the Bassi Fort Palace. I have no idea what it costs since it was part of a package deal, but I'm sure it will be more than a guesthouse, so if you're a 20-something on a tight budget it may not be for you. They provide meals (optional) and all the rooms have private baths, etc.

One of the highlights is the resident dog who thinks he's a guide. We wanted to see the old ruined fort on a hill behind the "palace" and the owner said, "Musti--GO" and the dog eagerly bounded up the hill, and kept looking back to see that we were following. Musti led us up and then back, and any time I wanted to go for a walk somehow Musti knew (even if in a dead slumber on the other side of the building) and insisted on leading the way.

I hate to say it, but Bundi has been somewhat overrated on this site. We found it to be pretty commercial and full of the beggars and touts like others of the tourist cities. Bassi (near Chittorgarh) was much more genuine.

I don't recall exactly, but LP has the famous line "It is possible to take an early bus from Udaipur to Chittorgarh, spend about 3 hours visiting the fort (by rickshaw or tonga), and then take a late afternoon bus to Ajmer, but this is definitely pushing it." Never ones to be held back, we definitely pushed it and did it the other way around, that is Bundi - Chittoor - Udaipur in a day, including bicycling around Chittaurgarh fort for a good part of the day (you have to push it up but it's great once you're up there and for the ride down, never minding the brake pads flying off so watch your speeding.) I think this was all by bus, generally quicker and easier to get around Rajasthan anyway on most routes, and assuming the above still works you could drive on till Ajmer. And indeed it says here that Ajmer used to have bus connections to both Chittoor and Bundi yes. Of course with the buses they can always be suddenly booked full, not going at all, whatever... Arrange your onward ticket upon arrival and before going sightseeing.

I was a little unsure when I typed that, so had a check.

Train 2955 departs Kota (32 kms from Bundi) daily at 08:50 and gets to Jaipur at 12:45. (1A, 2A, 3A, SL.)

There are no good train connections to Ajmer, but a bus should only take just over 3 hours.

So from what I understand it would be wise to travel from Udaipur to Chittaurgarh in the morning, walk (and cycle!) around the fort, then in the afternoon take a taxi to Bassi (only 24 km), sleep in Bassi Fort, then the following day to Bundi (guess by bus or taxi, we'll just see), see if we can get a nice place to stay there, and then my plan just stops.

Would it be wise to hail a taxi and travel directly to Ajmer, or go back to Chittaurgarh and take the train to Ajmer and if so, do that in 1 day or sleep in or near Chittaurgarh again??? It will probably all work out along the way, as it always does, but still - I prefer a little bit more knowledge in advance, so we can alter fate...

Thanks again,
Marino

I didn't get the Bassi bit, you didn't bring it up before. Staying in Bundi would be nice yes but I thought you wanted to just stop in Bundi for the day then move on. As has been noted you should be able to get a bus from Bundi to Ajmer just fine I think but maybe Steven with his plethora of train (and bus?) advice wants to comment on it again. And as has been noted, backtracking to Chittoor to catch the slow train would seem like an unnecessary move.

Bassi is close to Chittorgarh, and the question was, where does one stay near Chittorgarh.

Yes I see now Sharonov Bassi had been suggested by you, sounds like a nice place!
I was concentrating more on the original question and the bit about how do I get from Chittoor to Bundi for a day and onwards to Ajmer from there, hence my replies. Hope it's been settled now, Marino will make it there I'm sure.

Most definitely yes, the place is massive so it's not doable on foot I think.

Last April (no trains from Udaipur) we rent a driver for the day in Udaipur, and went from to Chittorgargh (early morning), then visited the fort, and he dropped us at the station, where we took Train 9019A (Chittaurgarh 14:55, Bundi 16:57).

Bundi was the only station where we didn't find ANYBODY at all at the station (just 2 other people getting down from the train), so we had some problems to reach the town (about 2 kms away, and very hot). So maybe you've better to arrange before a pickup from an hotel you choose in Bundi.

Ciao

the fort was great, especially because we were more or less the only tourists (we only meet some Indian school trips, there).
Just remember that there are many monkeys and they can be nasty, so don't bring food (or don't show it), especially no bananas.
