Just Returned From The Promised Land
Hi Ya'll, I have just this week returned from India, I used this website to do much of my research before my departure, and found it to be very very informitave. I just registered today April/27th/05 in order to post a thread, this is my first.
I thought I would do my bit to assist others who may be a little apprehensive as I was more than a little concerned about my first trip to the North (I had done Kerala a couple of years ago). For the record I am a middle aged man 44yrs, traveling alone as my wife refuses to visit or take the kids to India, she does not understand India and has no interest in India, but she understands that India is in my heart and is happy for me to do what I have to do. Anyway, I arrived in Delhi at midnight got a prepaid taxi to the Marina hotel, no problems 250/-rs. All went well. I traveled by train to Varanasi stayed at the Scindhia guest house FANTASTIC, went by train to Agra, forget where I stayed ? but it was wonderful, went by train to Jaipur, stayed at the Arya Niwas, FANTASTIC, went by train to Jaisalmer, stayed at the Jaisal Castle inside the fort, FANTASTIC, returned to Delhi by train. I Just want all of you to know, during my 3 weeks (very short but hey, better 3 weeks than not at all) though the weather was warm, the people ALL OF THEM were warmer still. I experienced nothig but warmth, kindness, generosity and consideration from everyone I had the pleasure of meeting, both on trains, in guest houses and on the street. My advice is, go to India as soon as possible with an open heart and an open mind...........Oh and an open wallett. Enjoy every minute that you are there do not be intimidated with the visual aspects of India's big dirty cities they are wonderful but remember it's the people who make the cities of this world and the Indian people are among the kindest people to be found anywhere. In my experience, in order to run into trouble in India you would have to be very unlucky or very very stupid. Be respectful, courtious and patient and I'm sure all will be well. Ram Ram JayTee

JayTee: Welcome to the forum, it is nice to have you here.
Your keeping an open mind and realistic expectations with India made you have a great travelling experience. You have been changed forever in certain ways even without your knowning it. Ram Ram, Dua Salam!

Welcome JayTee,
Pleased you had a great first time in India & have taken time out to post some feed back. Just one thing. you said "India is in my Heart", and I got to wondering if it's a 'roots' thing or just an acquired Interest, maybe you like the food, I dunno,, Care to add to that, |

I'm glad you had such a great time, and Congratulations to you and your wife for agreeing to disagree. I went to India without my husband, but with his blessing also. I'm sure it worked out better for both of us.

Hi Folks, Thanks for your replies to my first "post" it feels good.
Seventies Hippy ! wish I was ten yrs older and knew you way back when. Sounds like you had a real good time in the 70s, I was still at school at that time. Pleased to see you and your good lady are retracing those steps, good luck and keep on moving. In answer to your question: India has always been a magnet to me, the cultural differences the architecture the people the food the smells the tastes.................you know.............everything. I just love it. |
