Just how good is the Jagat Niwas? And when hotels say they are booked???
I'm attempting to book in Udaipur for 31st Dec - 4th Jan 2008 and have emailed Jagat Niwas (1st pref), Haveli on the Lake, Kankarwa, and Amet Haveli requesting tariffs and availability of Lakeview rooms. So far only Jagat Niwas has replied and their lakeview rooms are booked until the 2nd - and they are pushing 'urgent urgent!!' for me to book to secure any room at all!
Do I book 2 nights in the non lakeview 'deluxe' and then transfer to the lake view, or do I ring around the others (wait until Monday?), or wait until they email back ... Do you think they set aside rooms for tour operators and they may become available later??Or perhaps are testing to see if I'll accept a non-view room - Or if they say they are booked they are booked ![]() |

I stayed at the Jagat Niwas (Palace) in February this year. I had stayed there once before with a tour group in 2000.
The hotel is well located and has great lake views from its two level cafe. Some of the rooms have windows only into the central courtyard with perhaps glimpses of the lake beyond. This is common with hotels that are converted havelis such as Jagat Niwas. In 2000 my room had no windows at all, just vents. Udaipur is not a place in which people should spend their time in their room. It's much more interesting to be out in the fresh air(one of the best reasons to visit Udaipur). The rooms today are attractively furnished and are well maintained. Service is friendly and good. Food standard is just medium. People come for the view and the pleasant haveli atmosphere. |

Very good hotel, it will better for you to reserve it before October because December is very busy time for India tourism. Specially at the time of Christmas and new year. Last moment it is always hard to get room and expensive too.

I did not get booking for any room at Jagat Niwas Palace Hotel this Feb. Since LP has highly recommended this hotel, I visited their restaurant for lunch. The hotel looks lovely. The restaurant's ambience is superb, food is good and staff is friendly. I am sure, you will enjoy your stay - both at Udaipur and Jagat Niwas.

Jagat Niwas is very good and yes, they do take group bookings which limits the availability of rooms. Udai Kothi is also nice. Haveli on the Lake which i reviewed is a friendly homestay accommodation run by an English lady and her Udaipur Indian partner. Spotlessly clean, and good food. Jagat Niwas and Udai Kothi are the 'good' hotel atmosphere with Jagat Niwas having the lake views and in an excellent location. Views from Haveli on the Lake also stunning, and in a quieter area but not far from everything
I stayed in Jagat Niwas in 1999 and really loved it - beautiful decorating and atmosphere etc. More expensive than the one I have recently reviewed however. Just re-read your post - Carol from Haveli on the Lake is presently overseas so may be small delay before you hear back, but I think you would have no problem with those dates because very advanced booking. if you have your heart set on Jagat Niwas I would go with what they offer - you can see the lake lounging in lovely arched alcoves in the restaurant area and just nearby. move into the lake room when available. |

Carol sounds lovely - she emailed back and we are booked... neither of the others even replied - we'll eat at Jagat Niwas anyway! Looking forward to the NY Eve fireworks on the lake!

Good news Kristinm! We did that, myself and 2 Australian women friends, ate at Jagat Niwas so you got a feel of the romantic Udaipur on the lake at night atmosphere, and also nearby is a very good French name restaurant, Ambrai or Ambai (my memory terrible if I don't write things down!) only a couple of mins. walk from Carol's and we saw fireworks for a marriage coming from Lake Palace. Most spectacular and my friends thought a real bonus! Enjoy yourselves!
