Jodhpur to Udaipur by train?

Hi guys,
I can't seem to find a train going from Jodhpur to Udaipur.Do I have to take a bus or something or do I get a taxi to Marwar Junction and get the Pune express? How complicated is that going to be ? Any seat 61 devotees out there?

The best way to do it by train is to schedule your trip in such a manner that Jaipur comes between those two cities.
There are many trains between Jodhpur to Jaipur and then on to Udaipur.

take a taxi and stop in Ranakpur/Kumbhalgarh on the way. Its worth it.
Otherwise bus is the only option or flight.

I think over Ajmer is another option, and less of a detour. There seems to be just one train there daily from Jodhpur though, leaves 07:15.

It remains an impractical detour either way, so bus or taxi is the preferred option. Remember with a taxi, going one-way you'll be paying the driver for the return fare as well. If you opt for the latter, there are said to be some good sights along the way that can be done by cab (not by bus I don't think) in a day trip to Udaipur. Just look around this site some for this route, it gets discussed a lot. (E.g. Ranakpur and Kumbhalgarh were already mentioned just above.)

Actually I wasn't suggesting a detour as such.
Most people also visit Jaipur while in Rajasthan.
What I'm suggesting is to position Jaipur in between Jodhpur and Udaipur in the itinerary.
Travel by train in that order.

there are private buses and state run buses from Jodhpur to Udaipur. There are no trains. Though not many may agree but its better to take the state run bus than a private run as they at least ensure u reach on time. there is a bus leaving every hour from Jodhpur to Udaipur.
check the RSTDC website for further details.

The RSTDC site shows only silver line bus run from Jodhpur to Udaipur. Are there public deluxe bus or above running this route?

Check again. In my time we used to go from Jodhpur to Marwar Junction, have pakoras and tea at Marwar Junction, and proceed to Udaipur by another train, to be treated to a wonderful journey through the Kambli Ghat section while crossing Aravalis. So, perhaps they transfer the bogey from one train to another.

Jodhpur-Marwar is broad gauge, Marwar-Mavli is metre gauge (though being converted to BG soon), and Mavli-Udaipur is broad gauge.

I also heard that it's a nice journey.

Looking for a Marwar-Udaipur train is what really got me searching for info on Indian trains all those years ago.

Yes, I saw your 2004 post. Was it 2004?

You are right. It cannot be done with 61 devotees, unless their destination is Kankroli or Nathdwara. It is no problem for a back packer wanting to see Khambli ghat section (during rainy season).

Probably, back in the days when I knew nothing about the trains in India.

Sometimes I wish I still had that innocent lack of knowledge.
