jodhpur and jaipur in august

Hi,
I'm collecting tips for my first travel to India and in particular I wish to know more about Jaipur and Jodhpur, the two cities I would like to see in Rajasthan, travelling by train. I wish I could visit more but I've just 20 days and plenty to do around Delhi etc....
Jaipur : i'm a bit doubtful about either going there or not, imperial and fully artistical city but also (as it seems from many reports) a tourists' hell. Would you recommend spending a couple of days here or not? Do you know a quiet and safe place to stay? like family guesthouse or so, if possible.
Jodhpur : fell in love with this city at first sight thanks to pics seen on the net! How much time do you advice to spend here? Any suggestion? I know it's far from Delhi, but I wanted to see the desert and thought this could be the right opportunity for me. How is the weather there in August? Is monsoon really hard to face?
Many warm thanks in advance!

Hi
Im no expert, but I was in Jaipur for 4 days in april this year. I think you need at least 3 days to get an impression of the city. Its really buzy and traffic is hell..but im still glad we went there. We stayed in a hotel called Amber View, close to Amber fort which,I would say, is the most intersting spot for tourists here. The fort is a couple of kilometers oustide the city though. Still, we enjoyed the hotel(simple but clean and very nice staff) , placed in a nice and calm area, next to small markets and homes of many locals.
As for the tempereature in August-ask someone else..

Good luck!

Warm to hot, I too like Jodhpur but I had fellow participants to go around with. Jaipur, the Amber Fort was great but the city could be done in a day if I had the chance to see Udaipur..

For my money, I'd give Jaipur a miss & head on out to Jaisalmer.

It's ~ another 7hrs by bus from Jodhpur but a lot more interesting than Jaipur.

August will be warm but not intolerable.

As to how many days to spend in Jodhpur, I'd allow a minimum of 3 days. The old palace deserves at least 3 hours. There's the walking tour inside the palace and then there's the outer section to see also.

If you make it to Jaisalmer, allow 3-4 days to see a number of the palaces; havellis; temples; markets; desert scenery; etc.

Cheers
Zoltan

I loved Jaipur. The City Palace and the observatory, the Amber Fort and Monkey Temple, the Hawa Mahal and much else -- Jaipur has many more interesting sites to visit than either Jodhpur or Udaipur. I'd recommend at least three full days.

Jaipur is like the centre point of Rajastan. It is the starting point when you come from Delhi. So it is worth spending a day atleast looking around. But I agree that Jaiselmer is superb, and so is Jodhpur. But both cannot hold your interest for more than a couple of days each. Try Udaipur. It is really nice.

Thnks to all who replied!
I see Jaipur gives different impressions, but I think it's quite obvious, as we're all different minded, luckily...
Linnmenzel, I'll follow your advice to stay at Amber view hotel if i decide to visit jaipur in the end.
thanx again
