Jod or Jais?

I am visiting Rajasthan in July - i know, I know it is very hot. I would like to go to Jaisalmer but it is a very far drive. Is Jodphur a good alternative? Or is Jaisalmer a much better a place to go to? Also - how long is the trip from Jodphur to Jaisalmer by car?

I only know they are two completely different places. What are you looking for? Maybe search around on this site a little to get an impression. Don't know travel time by car, train used to be around nine hours (may have improved as the tracks have in parts of Rajasthan I take it), bus five hours.

Jaisalmer is definately more worthwile seeing than Jodphur. It is much smaller and has more sites to offer and is like travelling back a thousand years, except for the busloads of tourists, although there will not be many in July as it is verrry hot there. The drive from Jodhpur to Jaisalmer takes about 7 hours depending on the route taken and the driver. Will you be hiring a driver and car? There is also a train from Jodhpur that is very nice and a scenic ride.
Jodhpur is a big ,touristy, chock full of touts kind of place and Jaisalmer is a lot more mellow.

Another route?

So - how bad will Jaisalmer be temperature wise? Am I crazy for going? Also - do you recommend Udaipur over Jaisalmer? I understand it is cooler there than Jodphur and Jaisalmer? is this correct?

Let me ask this - would you recommend Jaipur - Pushkar - Udaipur or
Jaipur - Johphur - Jaisalmer? please bear in mind that it's July!

To get an idea of temperatures have a look here India climate chart . Note these are general estimates.

To advise on those towns is just so subjective, again if you can tell us a little more what you're looking for or are expecting maybe someone can help you. They all have their pros and cons and their ardent followers and detractors.

The temps in July at Jais will be over a hundred every day sometimes up to 114.
Both Udaipur and Jaisalmer are better than Jodhpur to visit. Smaller and easier to get around and not as much urban sprawl and industry. If you can bypass Jodhpur and see some other places...do it. Pushkar is also very beautiful and is very calm and cheap when the camel fair is not on.

Jodhpur's fort however is magnificent and the old town with its bazaar is quite nice, with all the touts that come with it. I found it less overtouristed than any of the other places mentioned really. Like I said it's all very subjective, I've returned to places a couple of weeks later and found them nothing like the dream they were before. It's all a matter of do you meet the right people and have that excellent roti etc.

weather does seem to play a major factor. quite a few people have said it is pretty hot from May to Aug. Even if weather is hot and hopefully if there are no power blackouts, airconditioning would be the solution. delhi and some other places i have been to in the hot season, power shut downs are regular. what are the chances of the weather heating up and power shut downs in rajasthan? Has anyone endured the heat and still made a trip to these regions.
