A camel cart is an interesting option and saves you getting a sore bum!! Used to be you could hire such a cart I'm sure you can still travel this way if you ask around!
Other than that I'm sure you can organise a 4 wheel drive these days for a couple of nights under a desert sky!

I'm pretty sure there are also horse safaris available (though I have no idea what the saddles are like - with a bad saddle it would be almost as bad as a camel ride anyway) or you could take a jeep out.
I don't know any specific agents but it's pretty easy to organise these things once you arrive in town

You could take a local bus to the village of Khuri - about 50 K's south west of Jaisalmer.

There are various guest houses to stay in. People will ask you to take a camel trek, but you don't have to if you don't want to. You can just go off walking into the desert and there are good sand dunes about half an hours walk from the village.
What a long strange trip it's been!

Hi. Is it possible to hire a jeep in Khuri for a short trip around? And is it possible to hire a jeep for an overnight trip (with sleeping in a tent in the desert)? What would be the cost? Thanks

Everything is possible in India!

Yes, they have jeeps in Khuri. You could hire one to drop you off in the desert for a couple of days and pick you up again. You don't really need a tent as it's unlikely to rain outside of the monsoon season. Take some food, cooking gear and sleeping bags or blankets. Price would depend on your bargaining skills but it shouldn't cost a lot.

Hi ennmak1

Do you know this place called Manvar Desert Camp on the way to Jaisalmer from Jodhpur? They have done a great job in putting up Swiss Tents right on the Sand Dunes and they also organise a Camp Fire, folk dances and Dinner in evening time. I am not sure if you will be willing to spend that much, but its worth of experience specially very nice services and you can ofcourse reach by your own transport

Buses for Khuri leave from the bus stand just outside the Amar Sagar gate on the west side of town, or at least they did a couple of years ago when we were last there, and take about one and a half to two hours to reach Khuri.
