Jaisalmer:via Barmer or Jodhpur??
Hi everyone,
I have been asking many people that which route should i take to reach Jaisalmer from Ahmedabad.Majority of them have suggested to go via Jodhpur which i think a longer route Do the roads via Barmer have capacity to cause havoc in one's stomach?Or the flood has affected the roads? Is it okay if i go to Jaisalmer without reserving a hotel?I plan to be there during christmas week... Take care and hope you all have made plans to spend new year out of your home town.... |

All I can tell you is I got from Jaisalmer to Ahmedabad via Barmer just fine but that's quite some time ago. J'mer-Barmer was in private car btw but I assume (or am pretty sure) there are buses. Don't know anything about recent floodings, it seems to be the direct route however. Jodhpur would seem a little roundabout to me yes. I found the whole thing rather enjoyable but hey I was just a goofy westerner on the road. Long ride really as I recall. Depends if you want to see anything along the way too, but that's not the impression I've been getting.
I can't tell you about these hotel reservations, folks seem to get worked up about it these days. It was touristy then (Nov.) and I'm sure it'll have tripled if not more by now. I can never believe you won't find a place to sleep though but maybe I'm wrong. Take care with the cheapies as it's not the room they're renting, it's the safari ride, and they may get prissy when they find that's not what you're taking, or not with them. Extends into the higher echelons too I believe.

Hi there
depends if you prefer train or bus journeys really. I would choose the train any day, even if the route does seem longer, unless you are prepared to fork out on a private car. I hired a taxi from Jaisalmer in November and it was 4 rs a kilometer for a return journey or 8rs 1 way. As for accomodation, there are so many guest houses and hotels in Jaisalmer you wont struggle - but as machadinha says a lot will hassle you into taking a safari so be warned. Try Jai Laxmi Paying Guest House inside the fort ( past the Jain temples ) as I know they dont ever force a camel onto someone so to speak ![]() They are in Le Routard guide.
