Jaisalmer - Update to guide books..

Some local news of businesses that are mentioned in many of the guide books.
Mohan Juice Centre is now re-located to Gadi Sagar circle area out on the main Station Road. They have a large new refurbished, very clean (unlike the previous one which my former places of residence health authorities would have closed on the spot!) shop with tables, chairs etc. Best lassi in Jaisalmer in my opinion. Also good cream freeze ice-cream and orange juice.
If you don't want to go the distance and are in the Fort or its environs, then try Manisha Juice Centre, just along from Fort View Travels in the main market street near Gopa Chowk. His lassi is excellent too - in both cases i am talking about Makhania Lassi with saffron, cardamon etc. This shop is absolutely spotless, the cleanest juice shop and ice-cream place in Jaisalmer I think - apart from the Kanchan Shri ice-cream parlour in Gadisar Market.

Fort View Travels now has the rail computer ticket booking agency for Jaisalmer - as far as I know the only one. Check his commission rate and you might find worth paying it for the cost of a taxi return to the station, plus the endless wait in line for army blokes booking with their concession forms (20 mins. per person by the one fingered computer 'expert'). I use them all the time - attempted the computer from home thing - posted a thread about that - gave up. Got my ticket in 10 mins. from Fort View folks. They are located in Gopa Chowk on the corner where the small main market street starts.

Can you help me with some info please?

What are their charges (commission) for the following tickets?

A Sleeper Class (not air con) ticket for 1 person? and for 2 persons?

An air con ticket for 1 person? and for 2 persons?

(I think there are 2 set prices, air-con and non air-con, and I'm trying to work out if their charges are per person, per ticket or both)

Do they book the ticket (through the computer) on the spot and issue you with a ticket immediately? or do you have to come back later for the ticket?

Are you issued with a proper Indian Railways ticket? or something to exchange for a ticket? or something else?

Sorry for all the questions, I'm trying to understand how these agents work.

Thanks for any info.

He charges 30 rupees for his own commission, but on top of this is the amount allowed by IR which I read one time when I got an e-ticket from an Udaipur agent in Feb. for train Delhi - Jodhpur. I will check it out for you what these amounts are - yes, they varied according to the class you booked. He gives you a print out of an e-ticket which is valid for the journey and you give to the ticket collector on the train plus you must have some form of identity e.g. Passport. You don't need to change this for standard railways computer ticket from the train station.
He books the ticket on the spot, prints it out on normal A4 paper and that is it. All done in less than 10 mins. His computer working much better than mine - he is of course going to the agent site. You carry this piece of paper as your ticket on the train (done this before so know already and it is valid).
Train man checks it, checks your identity, ticks it and hands it back! Normal procedure for ordinary tickets, except you don't need identity check for 'normal' tickets. That strikes me as a bit odd really!
I will try to get the other questions clarified for you tomorrow
when I do my subzee(veggie) shopping in the morning - he is very close to the subzee mandi and my routine lately has been, subzee, lassi in the new shop I recommended since Mohan has moved, and the agent is between! In the meanwhile maybe some helpful other IM may already know and will save me a trip!

Thanks for the info Aishah, any additional info would be wonderful, but just wait till you're passing the office, there is no rush for the info.

Thanks again.

Angry

Just wrote long reply but computer got 'stuck' so here we go again-visited this morning, he is an elderly man, very busy, and couldn't find his sheet of paper with rail charges on it so gave me off the top his head but for absolute accuracy maybe you could find something about this on indian Rail website?
For non a/c it is 20 rupees for one person, 25 for 2 on same ticket - the price p.p. decreases the more people are booked on the one ticket.
For a/c it is 30 rupees for one, and same principle for more than one as above.
THESE ARE THE RATES SET BY INDIAN RAIL
On top of this he charges 2% of ticket price for bank commission for using his own credit card.
And a service charge of 30 rupees - could be cheaper if more people are booked on one ticket.
Thus, I paid 60rupees plus 2% of fare - figured out my taxi to station would have been 70rupees return plus heat exhaustion standing up to 2 hours in line...Made his service very attractive! Better if I could have done it on computer myself - spent nearly 3 hours trying to do it to no avail. I have put the wrong smiley up at the top so ignore it - don't know how to delete it!

Very reasonable rates indeed. Better than the old 100-150 a ticket routine!

Well, it gives a benchmark for anyone booking through an agent and if my computer or rather IR website and non-acceptance of Visa card hadn't let me down I would never have known!!
