I'm planning to go by car (in Nov) from Jaisalmer to Jodhpur, then to Udaipur (via Mawar & Ranakpur). How's the road condition? Heavy traffic or not? How many hours should I expect for each segment? Thanks.

Are you going straight from Jaisalmer to Jodhpur or are you planning to stop off at Ranakpur?
Going straight from Jaisalmer to Jodhpur is about 5 1/2 hrs (without obstacles) and same for Jodphur to Udaipur. I thought the roads were in pretty good shape with only light traffic...that was Jan '05. |

On the segment from Jodhpur to Udaipur, I guess I have 2 options: a) via Mt. Abu, b) via Kumbhalgarh & Ranakpur. In both cases, I'd like to drop by places for sightseeing. For now, I opt for Ranakpur. Actually, I've been debating which way is more scenic. Any opinion? Forgot to mention, I'm spending a night or 2 in Jodhpur.

Mt Abu is a nice place if you are there with a romantic partner. The place itself is full of just married Indian couples. When I was there on my own I felt pretty lonely even though I enjoyed the place.

Stopped at Ranakpr for only two hours because we wanted to make it to Udaipr in one day. I loved Ranakpur: it is beautiful artistically and the Jain people are doing their practices as well. The road from Ranakpur to Udaipur is very scenic, and at times the road winds around as it passes through some hills. Farmland, very green (I was there in January) roads were good enough for me Glad to hear you will spend 2 nights in Jodhpur. Basically, you get in one late afternoon, get a good sleep, go out and see the fort and may-be a little of the area, then back to the hotel and out the next day. The fort is memorable, one of the best touristy things I have done in India. Happy trails to you! |

The road between Jodhpur and Udaipur is in a pretty bad shape with heavy trafic till just before Falna.
Thus if you want to vist Ranakpur and Kumbhalgahr you should leave really early in the morning or stay overnight in Ranakpur, ehich is in my opinion the better option. Going to Udaipur via Mount Abu is taking you too long, at least to do it in one day. The road Mount Abu-Udaipur is currently under construction to make it 4 lanes, so traffic is slow with lots of intereceptions (trucks off-loading material, etc.). Additionally it is not advisable to travel along this road after nightfall. Better to go from Jodhpur via Ranakpur to Udaipur (if you want to visit Kumbhalgarh, stay overnight in Ranakpur) and visit Mount Abu from Udaipur only. This drive is really scenic, going through the heart of the Aravalli Mountains with the road winding up and down! |

Mt. Abu is famous for Dilwara Temple.Stone craving is peerless. Visit to Dilwara Temple is life time experience.Scenic beauty of this place is also great but the temple is something special. It is a jain temple. As Anjuli advised go to Mt. Abu from Udipur.

Hi,
Jaislmer-Jodhpur, I would suggest you to visit Ramdevra Temple and Osiyan town on the way to Jodhpur from jaislmer this may take 8 hours including sight seeing ,these place are so worth visiting and also in this time these places and will give you 2 nice breaks on the way of 280km run. this way you will get to see villages off track the main road of Jasilmer-Jodhpur Highway that bus or usualy any tourists would be suggested to take. Jodhpur-Udaipur via Ranakpur and Kumbalgarh. This Road is a National Highway till you enter Falna City which will be about 120Km from Jodhpur. this 290km ride and about 35 km off route to kumbalgarh will take usualy 7 hours. Ranakpur temple opens at 12.00pm. Way from Ranakpur to Kumbalgarh and then to udaipur is very Scenic. you will like the different nature from this area , Hills ,Trees,Semi Jungles etc , comparing it from Jaislmer-Jodhpur the Arid Desert Zone. Feel free to ask me any other information you require. Regards Rathore. |

not at all, it is a perfect day trip, leaving you enough time to explore both the sites. It should be done by car though.

There are couple of places enroute where the road widening work of long stretches is in full swing. The work may probably continue for months. Hence it will be better to start from Udaipur early in the morning. Sadanand |
