Jaisalmer to Jodhpur by train or bus

I don’t want to book train as I want to keep the bus options open. Around mid day my trekking will be over at Jaisalmer and there is a train at 4 PM to Jodhpur. I will be at Jodhpur at 10 PM. That day I will stay and next day night my next train is there.

How is the bus frequency from Jaisalemer to Jodhpur so if required I can start bit early to Jodhpur and spend the evening there? Can I get bus as and when required in day time? Bus can give me flexibility in timing. Or I have to book train ?

Thanks.

Smo - go by private bus - they are more comfortable. They are departing hourly starting around 5.15 a.m. from Jaisalmer. Mr K is telling me now some are going even 30 mins. later as well - many buses to Jodhpur. They are also faster than the train.
Government buses are a bit dilapidated except for the one that leaves around 5.15 p.m. and goes onto Jaipur.

Definitely not! I am still in cottons, no singlet underneath - and the afternoons are high 30's still. The nights get cold but that is much later after midnight. It is slowly getting less hot by 1 degree about every 3rd day! Late November, the days will still be warm, nights a bit colder. There is a colder change predicted here for Sat. - last night was 'too' warm which often means snow is coming to the top mountains far away and the wind will turn to a cooler one bringing down our temps. I hope it happens.

Update to this - if coming from Jodhpur the buses leave from Bombay Motors corner - I have a feeling Bombay Motors have now vacated but everyone in Jodhpur including rickshaw drivers know where this is - you say, Bombay Motors, private bus stand.
Again the timings are around every hour. Also, your hotel can book the bus for you when you are in Jodhpur or Jaisalmer. I doubt that there are advance bookings any more than a day or two ahead.

Great Smo! would love to see some of your photos - I updated this thread for anyone else looking. And I bet you didn't need those woollen dresses did you??? I am still in my cottons now, and inside the cooler room of my house during the afternoons until around 5-ish when I stir myself to water the garden.

I took only some 5 T –shirts and wearing one jean pant during the trekking time, left all other luggage in base camp. That reduced the weight of my Back pack a lot.

Two more days I will upload the photos ..

oh i wish i'd known about the private buses! my contact in jodhpur put me on a govt bus and i traveled with villagers with terrible oral hygiene..i shudder at the memory.. i had to have my nose out of the window the whole time.. and oh yeah there were goats and chicken riding on the bus too.. interesting experience but not one i'd care to repeat.

smo, where'd you stay? do give trip details and upload pics!

Laughed at your post chocolatNY! Not only oral hygiene problems either, also nasal and children with weak bladder problems as well on the bus I was once on. In fact, after that ride I ended up with a bout of headlice, from hair contact with squashed in children, and a dirty back headrest. Still, it is the 'real' India as is often quoted...

my goodness... i guess i didn't have such a bad time after all!
the man sitting next to me had horrible paan stained teeth. from the way he was dressed, i assumed he was a day labourer .. but he said he was an advocate! anyway he was a nice fella, offered to share his food and all..

The other thing however about the private buses is is you leave late afternoon or early morning they will be less crowded with standing people. These buses will pick up villagers along the way who haven't booked. But they become crowded between the hours of around 10a.m. to 5-ish en route. Outside those times, they are pretty good. Village people use them to go to the nearest larger centre for shopping.
OT - Paan/betel, gutka must be so addictive - totally ruinous to teeth, but once 'hooked' there's no stopping evidently. And when you look at these disgusting teeth or almost no teeth as a result of it you wonder why, do they use it?
