I'm trying to find the best way to travel from Jaisalmer to Bikaner.

I found a train connection via Jodhpur:
- Jaisalmer 23:15 - Jodhpur 5:20
- Jodhpur 10:10 - Bikaner 16:00
(with few hours to have a quick look to the town)

What about the bus connection? How frequent are the buses, how long the journey, how comfortable? Is there a night bus? Are there toilets on the buses or do they make stops?

Thanks for the support!

Gianni

Gianni,

once you see the map of Rajasthan. u will see this train goes a whole way round, and so takes so much time. The journey path will be like an "L". If you go by road, it will be like "/". Understood? Go and go by road, there are buses and u can hire a car (that will be better) and can reach Bikaner from Jaisalmer in half day.

regards,

Bhaswaran

Yes Gianni, don't miss the sights in Jodhpur. Better spend some time during the day in Jodhpur & then take a bus or a cab to Bikaner.

The buses u get from Jaisalmer to Bikaner will be local buses and there are no toilets in buses.

I will advise u to go for a hired car instead.

But if u have not visited Jodhpur earlier, then go by train route and spend at least a day in Jodhpur for sight seeing, and then take the train or a car/bus to Bikaner.

regards,

Bhaswaran

Good hints, guys. Finally I booked the train via Jodhpur, with one day stop-over to visit the "blue-city" before Bikaner. I preferred this solution (yes, travelling an L-shaped itinerary) to the direct bus, I love travelling by bus in India but 6-8 hours can be too long!

Thanks!

There is no direct train between Jaisalmer and Bikaner. Changing trains at Jodhpur will take nearly 17 hours to cover just 578 km.
Take a bus or taxi.

Not yet, there will be soon.

It's amazing how fast a track can be built when it can prove useful to the Military.

Yes, only Sleeper Class.

Are you comfortable with Sleeper Class?

It'll be chilly on the overnight train, and it's not really long enough for a good sleep, so unless time is you major concern, you're best to avoid the overnight train.

Opinions vary regarding Sleeper Class, and I've not used 4704, but one member used the train in the opposite direction and wasn't happy.

Sleeper Class details & photos.

See Mickey's post (11).

Hey Mickey, where are you? Missing you.

Thanks Steven,

Still trying to work out timings for this part of trip left myself a bit short I think but will work it out. Not to keen on taking SL on this leg and would like to leave Bikaner late morning ... will have to think about it a bit more...
Car may be only viable option here. ....

Just out of interest, what's your Itinerary? (I can sometimes find good time savers)

If you've done a thread on your itinerary, just leave a link to the thread, I mostly just take a quick glance at the Itinerary threads, and if there's nothing I feel that I can add (that others may not think of) I don't look at the thread again.

Are you (or your travel partner) interested in an old Maharajas hunting lodge close to Bikaner (on the way to jaisalmer), it's a great place to spend a few hours and has a small lake with loads of different birds.

I do not want to be a thread-stealer but...

It appears I am attempting a similar intinerary.
I had planned to use the 4704 Bik-Jai (7:05-13:20) but after the above link, not sure I (or my wife) will want to.

Can you suggest a good contact in Bikaner for taxi/car?

Our plan is Delhi-Mandawa-Bik-Jaisalmer-Jodhpur-Udai..etc

You are welcome Koizi.

I have sent email to guesthouse I am staying at re car but I dont think getting one will be a problem at all. Will let you know what they say though.

There are also buses...One of which has web page with timings - will post it later .. they run two o/n buses and one morning one (latter leaves 5.30 getting to Jaisal around noon (if my memory right - will post link when i can -- remind me if i dont !.

How are you going with other parts of trip which are same as mine - I'm fully organised on those so if you want any ideas etc please ask. Just this one niggle left.

Have not posted Itinery it is a 60 day job of which india is about 45 days..will post extract later for your consideration though apart from this one item (which really is not a big issue anyway) It is pretty much booked solid re both transport and hotels... I did this with one motive of saving time on the ground as I have packed a hell of a lot in. Major taste of india I think .. I have been there before (20yrs ago now !!!) - my firends not.

Hunting lodge is absolutely my cup of tea (not sure about the two guys im travelling with) though gives me idea that if we take car from bikaner late morning it might be a good lunch stop.... would love more details of it.... Others cant complain as I am organising

Just got a quote from Vijay in Bikaner for a drive to Jaisalmer.
4900Rs.
According to the distance calculator at only 240kms (480 rtn) this seems expensive, given that I have had quotes from Jodhpur to Udaipur for 2800-3000rs.

What do you all think.
