Jaisalmer, relaxing or boring?
Hi there, having nearly decided on an itinerary which includes 4 nights in Jaisalmer (out of 15) I have started to notice comments on how small Jaisalmer is and how you can see it in a day. I had it down as a highlight of Rajasthan being somewhere to spend the longest time because it is slightly more remote, and hopefully somewhere to chill and really soak up the atmosphere. not looking for butlins just realness. Any thoughts anyone? thanks in advance.

Jaisalmere is lovely if touristy, and was for me, a real highlight of Rajasthan.
Don't fret - you can always take some day trips or a camel safari. The local tour operators will be more than willing to help!

Ummm, If you're on a tour a few nights here a few nights there then 4 nights in jaisalmer is perhaps too many if you're only interested in whats going on in & around the fort area. and that is little winding flagged streets full of touristy clothes/souvineer shops, camera/internet & every other need you'll require including cafes restaurants & views.
If you want a camel safari, go out & about to the lake or Burial grounds then perhaps a day or two more is ok. But bare in mind thet you'll probably arrive there mid to late afternoon which already gives you a part day to get your bearings + if you've got a car/driver at your disposal some out'n abouts can be done in the same days as you're exploring the fort,,,,,,,,,,,, |

Jaisalmer is unique, however, if your not going for at least 2 FULL days, it's not worth it, it is one of those places that you feel & experience.
I had 3 and a half days there and wish I had more time. You can see Jaisalmer on a tourist video, but to experience Jaisalmer you must give yourself time to adjust to the place. I would go as far as saying that ... once you get to the (living) fort you will know that it would be wrong to spend only one day there. |

thanks guys! a camel trip with night in the desert is a definite. i am never bored when i have people to watch and hopefully talk to, an ant marching along the ground, or a tiny bit of sky to gaze at so i dont really get it when people say theres nothing happening someplace so was just checking really.

A lot depends on when you will be travelling in Rajasthan. My trips there are in Dec/Jan and I have always been happy with my experiences in the desert. June - Oct might be a different story with temperatures in the high 40s day after day.
How you get to and fro is another consideration. The overnight train from Jodhpur is great as is the overnight return trip. There are other possibilities - from Bikaner in the north (which is another great place - in many ways more interesting as a desert city as opposed to a relatively small town) and from Barmer in the south which has a rail link to Delhi. The desert villages around Jaisalmer are very interesting places. Butlinesque is one of the last words I would have thought of to describe anywhere in rajasthan!!!! Come to think of it, Ringo thought that the ashram arrangements in Rishikesh in the 1960s were "Just like Butlins." |

hi tstan, excuse my sarcasm, meant that i wasnt looking for anything to do just be. will be in jaisalmer late october coming by car/driver from bikaner and as our tour is quite full saw jaisalmer as being somewhere to slow down .not bothered about the heat been to africa. guess i was just amazed to read on vt for instance that others seemed to find jaisalmer dull and 'you can walk from one end of the fort to the other in ten minutes' so what thinks i?its what you feel in that distance that matters to me.
