Jaisalmer News

Tomorrow there will be a general strike in Jaisalmer - all shops will be closed, no banks or government offices open.
The strike has been promoted by BJP party in response to a terrible incident the other day. Some people from Chattaral village (Muslim) killed more than 20 cows because they were eating their crops and vegetable gardens. They were pushing them over with tractors and running them over... Yesterday, most were arrested by police. Now tomorrow we are to have this strike.

I do not think it will be a huge effect on tourists or travellers staying here at the moment. As far as I know inter city buses are still running - if I hear to the contrary will post. This is escalating on a small scale into some Hindu-Muslim friction but I think will be mainly contained to the village areas. By striking in the city, there could be some incidents around Hanuman Circle, Gopa Chowk, Gandhi Chowk but hopefully nothing big..

Thanks, Capt!!Just shows what a dimwit I am.. was thinking maybe Other Minority Groups.. something like this but didn't think it fitted here. Yes, it is OMG - it is very rarely a complete shutdown of shops etc. here. Last time was for an All-India shutdown day, can't even remember when or what for now. We just hope things don't escalate. The Gujjars are starting protests again BTW (do know those initials!!)they are putting themselves into huge camp jails around Pali district etc.

Mr k has just come in for lunch and is telling me that possibly no buses will go tomorrow in or out of Jaisalmer. Travellers should check with their bus booking people if they are running.
As far as he knows, trains are still running.
Already some unpleasant things are happening - one of our relative's trucks was damaged this morning by throwing stones and people hitting it. He had nothing to do with the original cow incident, just happens to live in an adjacent village. Mobs are starting to gather in rioting mood. This happened just outside Jaisalmer on road to quarries.

shashank - cross-posted ! Yes, you are right, and a bit of humour is a timely antidote.

Intercity buses still running so far.. We have stocked up veggies and fruit for the day because nothing is open and nobody is going out. We were out for dinner last night and didn't go to Trio (very popular with tourists) because not far from there was a huge rally in Hanuman Chouraha - Mr K took one look and turned the car in the opposite direction to Heritage Inn! Didn't want to get caught up in anything..

Morning news - 5 trucks have now been damaged and one man killed..it is shocking how things escalate, the people responsible for killing the cows are now in gaol, but reprisals by people taking the law into own hands can be terrible here, not just our area, all over India you see these things happening.

more often than not..these things are motivated by political interest...and somehow rioting seems to have increased in past couple of years...not sure what is happening..

Agree with the political thing.

Yes, I too feel civil unrest has increased in the last couple of years, specially in Rajasthan and some other parts of India. Signs of frustration, perhaps?

I'm inclined to agree with Shashank on this one - most here agree however that the disturbances after the event are instigated politically, and the party concerned are using the people to stir up support for themselves, taking advantage of a 'bad' thing done by people supporting an opposition party.

News from my nephews who are near the main road - a huge rally of (they say) 15,000 people assembled at Gadisagar (where the lake is) and marched around to the Collector's house via the main road (Station Road) so I imagine totally blocked all access in and out of Jaisalmer for a few hours. He said however, it was noisy but fairly 'peaceful'. Totally Hindu - all Muslims are keeping indoors and well away. If it stays like this then there will be no provocations we hope. Mr K thinks all will be over by 5p.m. or so. People will start dispersing and heading back to their villages after meeting with Collector.
I might add, in all my time here I do not see instances of Hindu - Muslim friction - many friends amongst both, this is usually a very peaceful town. But if you kill cows then what can you expect? The rally is politically motivated as I mentioned before and organized by a political party. We all think for vote-collecting as there is a bit of a sliding down with this party here at the moment..
