Jaisalmer, but not a camel safari...
Hi, I am going to Jaisalmer early December. I would really like to go out into the dessert but don't want to go on a camel. Can you see nice dessert places by jeep? Or are the better places only accessed by camels?

Um, as far as I know, jeep safaris are quite common, yes.
But, er, don't take my word for it. Just bumping this really for others to fill you in. I'm sure some searching this site would also help you. In any case when I was there (some time ago) the camel or jeep would be up to you, it didn't really have any bearing on where you'd go. Jaisalmer is full of places to take you on a safari, you'd have a very hard time not to.

Julz - you can do outside touring in the desert without a camel - but you are only allowed within a 45km radius designated area. There are roads to villages and the border all over the desert - off-road touring is not usual but you will be well in the desert if you go out from Jaisalmer. Jaisalmer itself is in the desert!
You can get a good idea of what it is like without going on a camel. You could go to some quiet spot and have a bit of a walk - this will give you a good idea of desert life - also there are some villages you can visit.

Kuldhara is an interesting deserted village with a story attached - in most guide books and worth a visit. Living villages are Dhamodara, Ludrva, Chatteral, Roopsi, Ramkunda.. These are all within the permitted radius. Around Amar Sagar is also interesting. When you book your jeep, stipulate what you require and the driver/hotel people can map out an itinerary for you. Maybe others I haven't mentioned and more suitable for driving to. Be aware however, that in some of those villages that are visited by foreigners, the children have become 'pesky' asking for pens, rupees, chocolates etc. This is unfortunate - the habit has been developed by people handing items out willy-nilly; it's a tricky situation. None of this happens when I go out to Mr K's village because they don't know about this habit. But tourists are not going there as a normal thing. They like to remain 'undisturbed'. Maybe it is a two-way thing for tourist-visited villages - the people like them there because they might get some goodies from the tourists!
