Jaipur - Jaisalmer - Udaipur - which way?!
I'd originally ruled our Jaisalmer as we dont have much time, but the more I think about not going - the more I think we'll be missing out on one of the best places in Northern India!
So if we do decide for go for it - where should we build it into the itinery? So far the places we are definately going to are: Delhi Agra Jaipur Ajmer/Pushkar Udaipur Mumbai so the question is do we go directly from Jaipur & then back before going on to Pushkar OR go from Pushkar but then how easy will it be to get back to Udaipur (the only train I can find goes via Jaipur) and then how many days should we spend in Jaisalmer? at the moment it works out at 2 days travellling & would want to spend at least 1 night there - I guess I'm wondering whether the detour will be worth it?! I never thought making this itinery would be so difficult! ![]() |

Well to go to Jaisalmer, you have to go via Jodhpur which is also a nice place and has a great fort! Choices choices!
Do not know how many days you have but your original itinerary sounds fine with visits to Ranakpur and Kumbalgarh from Udaipur (can always keep Jodhpur, jaisalmer, and Mt Abu for next visit)! |

I would suggest you go by train Jaipur - Jaisalmer direct. Then back to Jodhpur - Ajmer/Pushkar - Udaipur - Mumbai in that direction. From Udaipur you can always do a day trip to Ranakpur.

Thankyou guys! I think we are going to do what you said Aishah & go straight from Jaipur, then back to Pushkar via Jodhpur. The only problem I am now having is finding the train from Jaisalmer to Jodhpur on the Indian Railways website - we were hoping to get the overnighter, but there only seems to be one train when I try & book, which arrives in Jodhpur at 10pm... I've been using Mr Shaktipalooza's wonderful Indiagroove to find all the trains, but when I come to book, certain trains don't come up as an option... does anyone know why this is? Should it be possible to book the Jaisalmer - Jodhpur Exp overnight train online?

Yes, it should. But I'm not the expert on this one! I've ended up going to the local travel agent because the IRCTC won't take my perfectly valid Visa card for some unexplainable reason! That train is daily leaving Jaisalmer at 11.15 p.m. arriving in Jodhpur at 5.30 a.m.
The train you mention is the Intercity one going onto Delhi after Jodhpur. |

Aishah,
Re the credit card on the IRTCTC website - it took several times for me to get my card working too. Try different card options that they give you (the provide about 25 I think) In the end I used the Citi PRG option (I think - its the last option on the top line) and it worked perfectly. It takes you to a Citi Bank payment portal. Good luck! p.s I went Jaipur to Udaipur by train - Udaipur to Jodphur by bus (takes about 7 hours) which I booked on the day of departure and was RS400 - then the dusty train up to Jaisalmer. Worked fine for me! Don't miss Jaisalmer if you want to do a camel safari. I stayed at Fifu Guest house which was amazing and they sent my sister and I on a camel safari which was just us plus 3 local guides. We slept under the stars and they cooked us a wonderful meal around a bonfire. Highly recommended! |

Twinkle - Thanks for hint re credit card and IRCTC booking - it's been quite some time since I tried, so next time I need a train will give it another go. I did try the Citibank Portal at the time and no luck... But maybe now it might work!
