Hi all - I've been studying IM for a while now working feverishly on my itinerary for next Aug-Sept. and must say I don't know what I would have done without this site.

I think I have all my stops identified and am now trying to figure out the best way between them. Specifically, the trip between Jaipur and Udaipur seems to be changed as a result of the completion of the broad-gauge line between them.

For this section of my trip I wanted to try to hit the following, leaving Jaipur and arriving Udaipur:

- Ajmer (for pushkar)
- Mt. Abu
- Ranakpur and Kumbalgarh (1 day/no nights)
- Udaipur

My questions are:
1) Can I get from Ajmer directly to Mt. Abu on a fast/comfortable train? Is it better to go to Udaipur first (it would seem not, unless the broad gauge train only goes here and that makes a big difference)

2) Is there any advantage to doing it Jaipur-Mt. Abu instead (either skipping Ajmer or doing that part earlier in the trip and going back to J for the train)

(I know these are matters of the schedule online but I am wary of very recent changes that seem to have been made)

3) In travelling from Mt. Abu to Udaipur, is it easy to hire a driver to stop at Ranakpur and Kumbalgarh along the way, or should I make my way to Udaipur first and then do a day trip?

4) Any suggestions for a cab/driver company in Mt. Abu or Udaipur?

Many thanks - any advice is much appreciated!

What places will be visited before and after this portion of your trip?
.
SOS: Missing Person...

Please look at this thread, even if you are not in India.: Have you seen Jonathan Spollen?

He could be anywhere now: You might have met him, be able to help, or give information.

This is my overall itinerary as it stands now:

Delhi - 2 nts
Agra- 1 nt
Jaipur - 2 nts
Pushkar/Ajmer - 1 nt
Mt. Abu- 1 nt
Udaipur - 3 nights
then to kerala for 8 nights in Cochin, Kumarakom and thereabouts
Back to Delhi 2 nts

As mentioned on another thread if it's very hot (we're travelling in late August/early Sept.) then we might cut out Pushkar and/or 1 nt. in Udaipur and opt for more time in the hills.

Thanks again for your response - any advice is much appreciated!

How are you getting to Kerala?

(it makes a difference to where you should end in Rajasthan)

I'll ask the following to save time.

What class on trains? (if using trains)

What day of the week will you be wanting to leave Rajasthan to go to Kerala? (trains going from Rajasthan to Kerala run on different (and few) days of the week, and from different parts of Rajasthan.)

Flights are not an option from Mt. Abu

Do you want to use overnight trains in parts of Rajasthan?

(If I had a rupee for every time I've asked these questions. )

Steven - I've read enough posts on IM to know that you have asked these same questions many many times and in a funny way it sort of feels like meeting an IM celebrity to have you helping me with trains

To your questions,

We are 99.9% decided to fly to Cochin from Udaipur

My main uncertainty now is whether we'd do better to go from Ajmer directly to Udaipur and then do a trip to Mt. Abu by car, and a separate day trip to Ranakpur and Kumbalgarh, or would it work to go from Ajmer to Mt. Abu, spend a night or two there, and then hire a car to drive us to Udaipur, taking in R and K en route.

I guess the main reason I could see the latter plan not working out as well would be if the new broad gauge line were to run to Udaipur but not Abu Rd. for example. Also if the train options are much better from Jaipur to Mt. Abu than Ajmer we could rejigger things to go from there.

As far as dates, the best I can guess we would be heading south from Ajmer or Jaipur on a Saturday.

Thanks again - really appreciate the help.

OK, you're probibly best to go from Agra to Jaipur, then to Ajmer, then to Mt. Abu, then hire a car and driver from Mt. Abu to take you to Udaipur via Kunbalgarh & Ranakpur, it will make for a long day in the car (esp. for the driver), but Udaipur is relaxing.

The most reliable train from Agra Fort station to Jaipur is Train 2988, Agra Fort 18.20, Jaipur 22.20, the train also calls at Bharatpur about an hour after Agra Fort, this can be useful as Bharatpur is only 25 kms from Fathepur Sikri (if you plan to go there).

The most reliable trains from Jaipur to Ajmer are: -

Train 2015, Jaipur 10.50 Ajmer 13.00 (not Wednesday)
Train 9708, Jaipur 08.45, Ajmer 11:15 (daily)

though there are plenty of trains.

The following trains run daily.

Train 9106, Jaipur 04.55, Ajmer 07:40, Abu Rd 12.43
Train 9708, Jaipur 08.45, Ajmer 11:25, Abu Rd 16.50

I noticed the following useful bit of info yesterday.
