Jaigarh Fort, Jaipur - A report

Dear All

Jaigarh fort, as some of us would know, is one of the most spectacular forts in India.

On a recent visit to Jaipur this weekend, I happened to go to jaigarh fort on 28th Feb 2009. The fort was closed however. I was told that fort had been booked for a marriage function and was hence closed for the day.

Well, I went back on March 1st and the fort was indeed open. The plight of it though shivered me timbers. The entire grandesque cultural heritage looked like a ramshackled junkyard. I was very disappointed to see the litter all over, empty bottles of liquor, plates, cups and what not.

I think it presents a very sorry picture of the Indian heritage to visiting tourists from india as well as abroad. I did not quite know how to protest and to convey my opinion. I did complain to the officials at the fort but I dont think they were bothered to listen and pay any heed.

So the least I can do is to generate some awareness through IndiaMike and make sure we all can strive to create an apt image of Rajasthan. I strongly believe we shall protest such rentals of heritage and cultural property for personal use.

Please have a look at the images. I'm totally disgusted at the moment.

Thanks

Not good images.
I hope anyone visiting these places from this forum would not like to create something like this there.

As a matter of fact, leasing it out for marriages has become prime objective. Such heritage properties are rented out quite a few times for obvious monetary reasons. Most of amber fort is also closed for public due to a bollywood movie being shot there.

Unlucky? I dont get the drift.

I dont think you understood the context of this thread. I dont care who goes to such places and when. They should be 'fine' 24x7x365

To be honest, I don't find it much surprising. This sort of heritage rental is common all over the world. I can even understand monetary reasons behind it. From the other side some crazy students' parties can leave less filth.
It's very sad that people who can afford to rent such place, can't respect its cultural and historical values.

During my last visit, two weeks back, Jaigarh was clean and quite well kept, so I hope it was just an incident.

Glad to hear that it was in better shape.

I totally agree that such rental is common. However, at the same time, the up-keep and maintenance of such places during rental is usually and should be better too.

I'm not against people using such places for memorable occasions RESPONSIBLY. It can add charm to one's wedding. Having said that, I dont see anyone making a mess of a hotel or banquet hall like this if they were to hire them. I think its to do with lack of apparent respect for heritage and culture which you've rightly pointed out.

My agenda is, If it cant be rented out properly and compliances cant be set for proper usage, It shouldnt be rented out at all.

By the way, this wedding was for a VIP as much as I could guess from the chartered planes at the JPR Airport and security around the road leading to the fort. Now thats another thing that most VIP's in India are still school boys.

Photos are from 1st March and it must have been all cleared out by the time you were there. Glad you took back some memories than disgust (like I did).
