Is Pushkar quiet after the Camel Fair?
My wife and I life in Jaipur and are looking for a close and quiet place to take a few days away in the middle of November. We were considering Pushkar after the Camel Fair was finished hoping that it would be more laid back and quiet.
What is Pushkar like after the festival is finished? Would it be good for relaxing? Are there better rates on hotels during this time? Thanks, Madhattons |

With the lake totally dried up, the word would be DEAD!

Thanks Trancebaba. Didn't have a clue about what it would be like. I had heard through the grapevine that Pushkar was REALLY crowded and dusty during the fair making it not as relaxing and enjoyable as they had hoped. We are definitely looking for relaxation and chill-ation!
Heard some good things about Inn Seventh Heaven. Any thoughts?? Also, sad to hear about the lake. And we were going to bring our jet-ski's and everything! ![]() |

I was in Pushkar just after the Mela last year; most of the people I met were having clothing made for sale in their shops in other countries. It was very quiet.
I had a great room at the Bharatpur Palace Hotel for Rs600

We stayed at Hotel Pushkar Oasis. Very decent place I must say. For a delhi guy, that I got parking was awesome. and the place was CLEAN. No shadiness. No trouble. And for folks who like a drink or two - we noticed junta drinking and mgmt looked the other way happily! The food looked okay though we loved the food at aroma intl (next to fair ground)

Thanks everyone! Sounds like Pushkar will be a good place close to Jaipur to get away from the hustle and bustle for a few days.
Much luv from J'town! |

I am in Pushkar right now and the place is DEAD. The lake is dry and there are no people by the ghats. The shrines wear a deserted look and whatever spiritual air the place had at a time is now gone. What exists is just a pretentious fad and a circus. The only thing that has survived is a whole line of shops desperate to sell cheap goods to foriegners and the uber chic restaurants selling European and continental food.
It's in equal parts fascinating and depressing to be here at this point in time. A pilgrim hub that has run out of water for it's people to wash their sins and thus stopping to be one. Comparing pictures of the place from the same time last year to this year, it's just terrible. PS: I would also add that it's also very actively hostile towards Indians. Ofcourse, not everyone in Pushkar is like that but it seems to have a lot more whites-only joints than anywhere else I have been to. Restaurants just won't let you in saying you need a booking but you see other people (read foriegners) just waltzing in unasked right before your eyes. There was a guy who ran a shop advertising itself as Salvador Dali inspired or something and when I asked if I could take a look, he just refused to let me in. This sort of thing is very off-putting and is unlike anything I have encountered travelling around. |
