Is it safe to travel to Jaisalmer?

I'm wondering how safe you guys think it would be to travel to Jaisalmer during Ausgust-September... what are the probabilities for conflict in the area? Have there any been any clashes in Jaisalmer due to the border conflicts?

All the best,
Piff

As far as I know, Jaisalmer is perfectly safe. You are not allowed to travel to the 'real' border areas (where the army is), and Jaisalmer is peaceful. Or is there a special reason why you think Jaisalmer will not be safe during that period? Some reason I am not aware of?

Jaisalmer and surroundings are so beautiful!

Just making sure!

Thank you for the feedback, Jaisalmer is the city I want to visit which is closest to the border, and I just wondered if there had been any problems in teh area in the last few decades that I wouldn't know about. )

Jailsamer is a beautiful city. I think a few years ago there might have been some concern...but now it is OK. Just pay attention to any last minute conflict/world events. Jailsamer is not to be missed! I wish I could have stayed there longer.

The only danger in Jaisalmer is from idiots trying to hard-sell you toilet paper, email services and postcards every step you take in the old centre. It's a nice peaceful place, enjoy. Make sure you wander around the old town at dusk, when the women gather in the courtyards and sing old songs together.

Yes, Jaisalmer is safe and tourism is flourishing in this little town!

But why do you ask?

namaste

I spent more than 150 days in six travels in Jaisalmer. This is a military safe border area. This is not so close from the boarder.

Lest year I made a little geography mistake. I arrived in Anoopgarh. This is protected area and you need authorization for that. The police was nice with me but after five days the CID (central inquiry department) made me understand it will be better for everybody to go away (the jail was not far...).

Before you arrive choose your hotel. And if you arrive there by bus or by train, when you are in the station, look for policemen of the TP (Tourist Police). Tell them where you want to go and they will ask to a rickshaw to put you in the place. Don't let a taxi driver choose anything for you.

Only one other problem : choose a good safari. If the rain arrive (good luck for local people !) in the desert you need a good camel driver to put you in a safe place (usually they are good).

lobo,
Jaisalmer in December will be very cold, particularly the nights. Make sure you carry your woollens.

Lobo,

Usually I go there in summer. In 2002 I want in march. In the night bus from Bikaner to Jaisalmer it was very cold.

For Jeroen : when I was a child we were used to say "who say the word idiot is idiot", with a smile too.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

When u say very cold how cold?, I was in delhi in dec/jan this year and that was fine is jaisalmer a lot colder? I am from england so its normally cold there anyway!!!!
I am planning on visiting HP from middle of october to late nov and then do a few places in rajistan in december. I thought it would always be warm in rajistan. I would actually prefer ot to be cooler.

Jaisalmer, being a desert area, will be a lot colder than Delhi at night.

However, if, as you say, you would prefer the cold, then you should be fine, but do carry woollens nevertheless.

Shimla is certainly not nice.

Its divine !

You must visit it during X'mas - New Year; with advance bookings, of course !

And yes, those woollies will be pretty useful in Shimla as well.
