Hi ,
We are planning a trip to Rajasthan in December. We have two kids (4 yrs, 8 yrs) travelling along with us. We plan to visit Jaipur, Jodhpur, Jaisalmer and go back to Delhi. We are staying 3 nights in Jaipur 2 nights in Jodhpur 1 night in Khuri (@ Mr. Badal Singh's residence) 1 night in Jaisalmer then to Delhi. I am confused if I should be visiting Bikaner or not? (i.e. Jaisalmer to Bikaner and then Delhi). Wanted to get advice is Bikaner worth stopping at OR not? Regards, Fatema. |

The Junagarh Fort and Lalgarh Palace are worth seeing. Plus the route via Bikaner back to Delhi avoids going back via Jodhpur and Jaipur.

Thinking of your 2 kids, there might not be much to do and see in Bikaner (apart from the Rat Temple in Desknok outside of Bikaner). Why not spend another day in Jaiselmer and do a camel safari - you could even stay overnight in the desert. That should be a highlight for the kids.

One plus point about Bikaner is that there aren't many tourists ... so no touts to hassle you! (So in that respect it is subtly different to Jaisalmer).
I preferred the fort at Jaisalmer (a living working place rather than one in pristine condition just for the guided tour). The people in Bikaner are so helpful and friendly. Huge police and army presence so very safe too! There is a camel research centre there too. You only need to be there in the evening when they bring the 300 camels home. During the day there isn't really much to see. try the milk or ice cream. I can still remember the smell of the rat temple!!! Gross! |

Bikiner
Because you are travelling with young children I would take a pass on Bikiner. My husband and I enjoyed visting all the places mentioned already, and I think the Fort was extraordinary, but your kids probably won't need to see another Fort, as the one in Jaisalmer is excellent.
I would add a day in Jaisalmer and do a small camel safari--as suggested. Even though it's got a lot of tourists, it's because it's a great place!! And the Deshnok rat temple is interesting for 10 minutes--too far to go just for that. As Helene said, I also found the smell horrible though I'm glad I went to such an unusual temple. Just my opinion ![]() |
