In Udaipur now
In Udaipur now
Hi guys I am in Udaipur now, 21st dec 2004, and will go on to Ranakpur, Jodpur and Jaiselmer by car starting day after tomorrow. I am staying in Udai-Niwas, which is bloody economical for the room quality. And has apparently the highest rooftop restaurant in town. The weather is nice and people are friendly. Lake Pichola is more like pothole pichola

is it still beautiful
Hey, alfa,
I wish I could answer your question about the nightlife. I still haven't made it to Udai, so I couldn't tell you. I hope you found what you were looking for. Instead, I'll ask some selfish questions, since I plan on spending three weeks or so in Rajasthan in Jan/Feb. Without the water, is the city still beautiful? What have you been doing there? Thanks in advance. Enjoy! |

Hi
I was there in october. yeah the lake/river was bone dry. however as its been this way for some time a large area now has a light grassy covering giving it a meadow sort of look. its a great place to see kids playing cricket as well. downside is you can see the royal palaces foundations, which do detract slightly from the overall effect. the city is still beautifill though. easily one of my favourite places in r/stan. I could fint any pubs as such when i was there. the social scene was mainly around the rooftop restaurants and late night shopping. i stayed at the udai kothi. a little pricey but an amazing place. its worth visiting to eat at the resaurant on the roof. its got the best views of any we visited and a cracking menu.. bear in mind most other places, even the popular ones like savage garden cant sell booze. |

I've got no questions, just a comment that in Udaipur I found bought the item that I most cherish from all my travels in India - a lovely miniature painting. I don't remember the name of the store, but if you are interested ask to see some of their better stuff - it's not all displayed.
Ranakpur rocks! |

As of the end of November, there was still water in the front of the lake, between the city and the Lake Palace Hotel. But it is expected to dry up completely before the next rains. But the city is still beautiful.
There are lots of miniature art stores there. I stayed in a lovely guest house above the store Janak Arts where they painted a miniature horse on my fingernail. |

We're heading to Udaipur on the 24th and staying in the Raj Palace Hotel. Has anyone stayed there? All our first choices were booked out cause it's Xmas.
Pity about the lake but I'm looking forward to it anyway. |

There is a slimy pond in front of the Lake Palace Hotel. There is a pipepline being built to bring in water to the lake but who knows when it will be finished.
Raj Palace is a very old haveli. The oldest rooms are in the front. All have private bath. They still don't have TV as yet but it kind of adds to the charm. Dr. and Mrs. Jallah own it and Mrs Jallah's brother, Shuru, runs it when he isn't doing guiding. Karan is at reception. The location is great. Walk up the hill to your left and you are at Jagdish Temple and the City Palace. Walk down the hill to your right and there is the back entrance to the City Palace and also the big garden and zoo as well as the Tibetan Market. There is a small internet cafe just three of four shops down to your right--City Centre. The two doors up from that a little "grocery" where you can buy your mineral water and cookes, etc. Yes even though the lake is nearly dry, there are still mosquitoes out and about. Don't miss the folk dance show at Bagore ki Haveli.
