how to get to Udaipur

Hi-
Is ee that there are no trains from Mumbai to Udaipur. what is the best way to get there.
This is our first trip and we are looking for a place to chillout for a few days and get used to India. We had planned to go to Nasik but heard the weather was bad and there was flooding so now we are thinking of Udaipur. its pretty far north (compared to Nasik) and a bit nervous since there is no direct rail. Any advice on the easiest way to get there would be great (or any thougts on going there first also welcome)
thanks

5 posts asking about places to go, but never mentioning when you will be in India.

This thread makes me believe you will be in India in a few days, in that case you may find it difficult to secure reservations on trains.

Help us to help you.

2 days

Yes We'll be there in two days for our first time.
Wouldn't expect the trains to be booked up since from what i read it is not high season, but I guess I am wrong.
Is there a train to Udiapur.
We arrive in Mumbai early in the am on Monday and want to get out of Mumbai and head somewhere northernish and stay there for a few days.
thanks

You will need to get a train to Ahmedabad, then a bus (5 hours) or a train from Ahmedabad to Udaipur.

You will find the train details in the 'Train Information' thread. (click the link below).

Karnawati express from Mumbai to Ahemdabad and then overnight Pasanger Train from Ahemdabad to Udaipur. You can seure online Reservation using www.irctc.com

However there are cheaper flights from Mumbai to Ahemdabad (under US$ 45) of Spice Jet and Air Deccan and then you may hire a taxi for Udaipur (4 hours) to save traveltime

Trains Mumbai - Ahmedabad - Udaipur

Hi, I've just booked to do this journey in November. After getting advice from the forum about the range of options, with day or night trains from Mumbai to Ahmedabad.

We decided to take the overnight Sauashtra Mail for the best nights sleep as it has First Class Airconditioned cabins - depart Mumbai Central 20.25, arrive Ahmedabad 5.20. This connects well with the Mewar Fast Passenger which should have as First Class non airconditioned - depart Ahmedabad 7.05 and arrive Udaipur 17.15.

(Important to note: When booking opened on the internet First Class was RT CLS Suspended, which means no bookings would be taken. This means travel in Sleeper Class, but as it appears that the Mewar Fast Passenger is on narrow gauge side berths are not available.)

We decided on these trains to get the best class for our night travel and sleeper class will be OK for the day travel.

Hope this helps. I'm a beginner at this, so maybe the wise ones can provide further advice.

Thanks was quite helpful. Unfortunately we started planning out trip quite late and we leave tomorrow night so reserving tickets is not possible. I am hopeful that we can get a ticket when we arrive for the same day!!!

Disa1,

Why Udaipur, if I may ask ? I believe you chose Nashik earlier just to be away from Mumbai but at the same time not too far from Mumbai. Udaipur is quite far away from Mumbai, hence a little surprised by the choice. Where do you plan to head to after Udaipur?

We plan to go up to Ahmadebad and Udipur and then back down to Aurangabad and then head more to the south to Hospet and end up in Goa. We decided to go more north because we heard the weather was better there and by the time we get to the south the rains/water will be better (or so we heard). I realize we are going to be on a train quite a bit but don't really want to hit any really wet areas (like Nasik which we heard was quite a mess now from the rain). We have check the weather forecasts and it seems that this way we will have reasonable weather.
Also- lack of advance planning due to lack of time until a week ago

Try Orchha instead of Udaipur.

You can get a direct train from Mumbai to Jhansi, then it's a very short distance to Orchha.

Then a direct train from Jhansi to Jalgoan for the caves.

Then again.....

Mandu would also be a good choice.

I'll not go on, I'm sure I could look and the map and come up with a dozen more convenient places than Udaipur.

why?

Not sure ofwhat the advantage of that would be. According to the train schedule it is longer to Jhansi from Mumbai than to Ahmendabad from Mumbai.
AM I missing something or did I forget to mention that we fly into Mumbai??
You seem to have so many awesome itineraries thanks for all the help so far.

It's just as quick as the total travel time from Mumbai to Udaipur, and much better for the trip to Ajanta/Ellora Caves, but forget it, you would need to get reservations on the Punjab Mail, but I doubt that would be possable at this late stage.

What about Bhopal (for Sanchi & Vidisha)? there are well timed overnight train between Mumbai - Bhopal and Bhopal - Jalgaon.

I thought so ! If its Aurangabad and then down south you are planning to go after the initial "acclimatisation", then no point going to Ahmedabad and Udaipur. You may stick to the original plan of Nashik ( I'm sure its not really flooded or inaccessible) or better still, go to Igatpuri, which is 45 kms. before Nashik and easily accessible by both road and rail from Mumbai. You can relax there for a couple of days(Igatpuri is quite divine in the monsoons) and then carry on to Aurangabad.

If you do decide on Udaipur try taking a trip to the beautiful Kumbalgarh fort...it's located in the forested hills. Cool place.
