How do you get to Jaisalmer???
What's the best way to get to Jaisalmer? I've looked for airlines, but it appears no one flies there.

Although there is an airport at Jaisalmer, it has been turned over to the military for several years now (the Pakistan border is quite close), and, as a result, no commercial flights are permitted. There are, however, trains from Delhi, Jaipur and Jodhpur, and some people on thses forums have mentioned hiring a car and driver. We took the train from Jodhpur, and it took just a morning; on the return journey, we slept overnight and arrived in Jaipur just on daylight. The trains are cheap (Class 3AC is best value for money), comfortable and reliable.... and safe! For timetables and fares, check the Indian Railways site: http://www.indianrail.gov.in/.

Personally I caught the bus from Jodpur to Jaisalmer, then train our of Jaisalmer to Delhi.
Do get 3A (at least) if you are going by train. It is really dusty out there and SL is just not nice on the lungs. |

I'm wondering about this myself. We've been planning to take the train between Jodhpur and Jaisalmer, but someone (I think it was an Indian Airlines customer service rep) told me that it's faster on the road. He was talking about a car/driver, but I'm wondering about the bus service. Is that better/faster between Jodhpur and Jaisalmer than a train?
And I guess this is a larger question. What are the nicest buses, and how comfortable are they? What about bathroom stops of facilities? How do you find them online, if possible? |
