Hello everyone. Was hoping to get a few personal recommendations on accommodation in Udaipur and Jaisalmer. Has anyone stayed anywhere great? Budget is approx 400 - 700. Could spend a bit more on a couple of nights if anywhere is really worth it. Any suggestions??

For Udaipur and that budget, I once stayed in Kumbha Palace, Battiyani Chotta, which is in walking distance of lake, palace, across the lake bridge etc. It has a good rooftop restaurant, and a garden for sitting out in, that backs onto the main Palace wall. Phone no. 0294 -2422702. Clean rooms etc. Also check out Hotels listing at the top of the page on the red bar for both Udaipur and Jaisalmer.

in Udaipur the Mahendra Prakash, a bit more expensive than the Kumbha Palace, but with great rooms, a good restaurant, a garden and a swimming pool.
Rooms start at 700 IRS. |

Hotels in Jaisalmer
I am not sure that there are any really good hotels in Jaisalmer. There are several huge new resort hotels with car parks full of coaches about 2km out of town. I don't know what they cost. We stayed at the upmarket Taj Rawal-kot in the same area. It is probably around 700 but you might get a discount (check on TripAdvisor website). However this was not up to the normal Raj standard. Rooms were decent size, clean and with good air-con. But few services or facilities. Good pool and quite reasonable restaurant but hardly any shade around the hotel and pool. It reached 40 degrees when we were there about 3 days ago and the whole place outside our room was like an oven.

For udaipur:
The lovely Udai Niwas Hotel. Rooms are 800 Rs total for very clean and pleasant rooms. Nice decorations in the rooms and a pleasant staff that cheerfully runs up and down the stairs the whole day. ans

Hi Char
Can highly recommend Hotel Fifu in Jaisalmer - it's outside the town, down a dirt road but easily walkable. The rooms are beautifully done, simply but attractively decorated, some with great views across to the fort. Beds and pillows are comfortable (ahhh!). The owner, Fifu, and his brother Jitu are both charming and will make every effort to ensure your stay is a pleasant one. They will collect you from the station and drop you there on your departure too. Sorry if this is sounding like it's an advert; it isn't, but this is one of the nicest places we have stayed in India. Good luck Mike |

I beg to differ, Normski. There are a number of good places recommended in the Hotels listing here, also LP has some quite decent places that are in the lower budget range. The hotels you are mentioning are in the very high end budget, and also quite a way out of town. Within the town itself and the Fort there are quite a few hotels and guesthouses that are very nice.
And yes, outside my back door it's like an oven too - but that's hardly the fault of the hotelier where you stayed! It's typical Jaisalmer weather in spring and summer! |

IŽd recommend Hotel Lakeshore, located in Hanuman Ghat.
Even when the rooms are just ok, it has a wonderful terrace (with views of the lake & the ghats) and a tasty restaurant. At the time i was there, prices were negotiable.

We are planning to go to Udaipur, Mt.Abu, Jaisalmer during the christmas holidays. 24thDec 08 to 4th Jan09.
One common advice in most of the threads..."Book Hotels Early". yes i know its PEAK season time but just wondering how much time in advance should i book. Thanks.. |

.... time and again i have been reminded that we are a country of more than 100 crores... Thanks... That means i would have to plan the trip right now... Only problem is that at the last minute, sometimes the trip gets cancelled due to unforseen circumstances.....I guess i will have to take the risk... |

The thing is all the good rooms and places fill up first too... we saw so many people trudging from guest house to guest house looking for accom - and all full! Especially in that NY period...

Completely and whole heartedly agree!! I stayed there with a company of 12 and it was the better than I could ever imagine. And that too for an amazing price in the peak season...the camel trek organized by them was very good too...
Go for Fifu without a shred of doubt in your mind... |

I recently stayed for 3 nights a Shahi Palace Hotel in Jaisalmer and never wanted to leave. They cater for all budgets, but book ahead as they are always busy. The view of the fort from their rooftop restaurant is sublime, and the staff are very welcoming. Also, it is a bad thing to stay within the fort for conservation reasons, so picking a place outside the fort is best for Jaisalmers future. I highly recommend Shahi Palace. Highlight of my trip to India.
