Horrible decision
Hi,
I am new to this forum. This is our first trip to India and we are being too ambitious about places to see. I have just realised that I cant see everything I wanted in Rajastan and I have to give up either Jaiselmer or Udaipur. Which one would those of you who have been to both would recommend?? We would be coming from Agra,Jaipur, Pushkar, Ajmer and Jdhpur and then have to head back to Delhi ... HELP!

I've have already answered in McMardhighan's thread.
The election for me is Jaisalmer. Leave Udaipur for your next trip. On the way to and from Udaipur you should also visit Ranakpur, Kumbalgarh and Chittorgarh. But as i said, in your next trip. Jorge |

Ola spanish lady,
I'd say both Udaipur and Jaisalmer are musts if you are in Rajasthan. Personally, I'd skip Ajmer and Jodhpur, shorten my stay in Jaipur and gain days to visit both Udaipur and Jaisalmer. Two wonderful places. Although, if you really have to choose between the two because there's no other way, I'd go for Jaisalmer, as Udaipur is somewhat similar to Pushkar, which if I'm correct you're going to anyway, so at least you'll have a taste of what you missed, whereas Jaisalmer is like nothing else I saw in Rajasthan. Camel treks are possible there and they are really nice. ...Sweet dilemma... Oh well, happy choosing |

Hola Espana!
wELL, both are lovely places, and you will not go wrong with either decision.
BasicallY, i would say it depends on your interests, as both locales are very differEnt and very unique. UDAIPUR is city filled with romantic lakes, hills, gorgeous Palaces and PALACE hotels, (City PALACE and MUSEUm! are spectacular) and home of the family of MEWAR, one of the oldest living dynasties in history. it is one of my favorite places in Rajasthan, a good peaceful atmspohere, alot of history, art, culture, and superb HOTELS, Lake PALACE, UDAvILLAS, Shiv NIWAS PALACE, ETC.. On the other spectrum, JAISALMER is a small city out in the Thar Desert, filled with a spectauclar Fort, old havelis, sandstone buildings, and a very magical/romantic setting. It is a really special place, and again, one of my favorite in Rajasthan. i guess i would lean towards JAISALMER, for its remoteness, landscape, and desert beaut! BUT either way, you are okay!. Buena suerte, vaya con dios, bonita

udaipur?
well, i have only been to udaipur, and i loved that place!
i guess the question is whether you want to see the desert part or the hill part of rajasthan. both are equally beautiful. |

Muchas gracias (thanks so much!)
You are all great. Thanks a lot for the advice. We are actually doing a bit of an strange itinerary. we will start in Siligury-Darjeeling, the Varanasi and the the Agra/Rajastan area. We are travelling with another couple that arrives in Delhi a week later than us and we wanted to do the Rajastan part together. the problem has been taht we have had to shorten our stay and we are likely to have to "sacrifice" one of the cities further away. It looks that, if the other 2 are happy with it, we may be choosing Jaisalmer! (we have to go past Pushkar and Ajmer in any case...)
Cragias again, and sorry Jorge, it was the first time I used this site and didn't know how to start a thread! ![]() |

Strange itinerary
I Honnzik,
Our itinerary, is a bit strange since it has been adjusted to not being able to catch a plane to Katmandu and going to Siligury instead (I now this is not all that reasonable, but...) and also to having to meet up with some friends towards the end of our journey and see Rajastan with them. Also, due to this we have finally been forced to take too many flyghts (we will have to cross our fingers and hope we can make it to all of them!). If I had planed the trip just considering our dates it would have been very different. Nevertheless, this is what we will be doing: Oct 30th: arrive at Delhi at night Sept 1st: 10am plane to Siliguri and get to Darjeeling somehow 2,3 rd: Darjeeling and around 4th: To Varanasi 5 th: Varanasi 6th: To Khajuraho 7th: Khajuraho 8th:To Agra 9th: Agra 10th: to Jaipur/Pushkar 11th:PushKar/Jodhpur 12th:Jodhpur 13th: Jaiselmer/Udaipur?? (most likely Jaiselmer, but will see there) Rest of days will depend on Jaiselmer/Udaipur choice. If we go to Jaisel mer, then we will do Bikaner and then back to Delhi via Jhunjhunu/ Mandawa. I hope this helps! |

Hi SpanishLady,
Phew,,,,,, I'm thinking it's quite a whirlwind tour there you're planning ,,,,,,. Lots of only overnighters, like in Jaipur/Pushkar/Jodhpur. The worry is yes, you're ticking the boxes, but not really seeing the places, For your thoughts today will be about were you're going tomorrow,,,,,,,,, India demands a much slower pace of life, Only my thoughts of course,,,,,,,,,,, ![]() |

Yes, I know
Hi seventies' Hippy,
You are absolutely right, I know. The problem has been that we did a little missplanning to start with, then had to reduce the length of the trip while still wanting to do part of the trip with our friends. We already had our flights booked and paid, so there is not much to do about it now, except try to enjoy it as much as possible. Also, our friends have started a travel agency and they are doing this trip for pleasure/business. We are also helping with it. It is a special concept for travelling in "backpack mode" while still using as a guide someone who has been there before. So we need to tick as many boxes as possible... In any case, we will be doing the Rajastan part in a car with driver, so we should be able to change our plans if we see it is too much. Thanks very much for the point! ![]() |
