OK thanks alot for your advice...I am still a bit unsure though because my itinerary sounds extremely busy now... Also, I have tried contacting many of the drivers that were reccomended to me, via email, and my email never gets through, it always gets returned to my inbox. Is this normal? If I don't organise a driver before I go how hard is it to organise one once I get there? Any advice regarding contacting a driver would be much appreciated. thanks, maddie

Maddie, I can't PM you because you've not got enough posts!

You mentioned a driver by name in another thread- I can put you in touch with him. I know drivers who know him, and I also know the email given in that other thread no longer works so I think he will be one of those you're referring to in your above post.

I've never had a tour with him so I don't want to post his details here in case people take that as a recommendation- I can't vouch for his services at all, I just know how to contact him. If he has more satisfied customers I'm sure they'll post his details here again, I just wanted to help you reach him as I know you're already interested in doing so.

I've just invented an email address that I don't mind getting spammed- if you'd like me to put you in touch with him give me a shout at

Damn, I've waited too long to edit my own post.

To other folk if you're looking for a recommended driver try browsing the Buses, Automobiles and Bikes board or doing a search, there's plenty of stuff on here.

The Yahoo email account will be closed once/if I've heard from Maddie- I'm not doing PR for this guy!

Ta.

We just completed a very satisfactory trip in Rajasthan with Rajasthan 4WD. The manager, Anil Sinha was an extremely businesslike and a good email communicator and our driver, Anish was also very good. We also had good luck in communications with Namaste India, though our we didnt wind up using them.

Hi Karuna, gosh you spend a lot of time on this thing...all to help poor people like me who are confused and really have no idea what they are doing! but thankyou thankyou!
I'm not sure who "him" is that you are referring to as the driver...is it sanjay, or vinod? Anyway, neither of their e-mail addresses are working, but they have both been highly recommended.
Just to give you some info if you need it, there will be 4 people travelling, and we will be arriving in Delhi on the 21st of December 07, and flying out on the 3rd Jan 08.
I will try that e-mail address, thanks!

Maddie, please don't highlight my extreme internet + India geekiness again. Heh heh!

But thanks for your thanks- I do try and be useful; not sure how successful I am sometimes, but never mind. I'll check that email account now (if I can remember the password ).

yeah i got the email about sanjays address but now unbelievably bobby thakur- another driver has got back to me with a lot of info, so I think I might go with him- he has been reccommended a lot on this site. The price seems fairly reasonable too. 380 euros for 14days?? Between 4 people that would be pretty good. But on this note it is a "tata Indica". Are these cars ok? Im not looking for luxury thats for sure, but don't want to feel like I'm being a contortionist in the car. Once again thanks for your help, Maddie

An Indica is too small for four people. Ask him to quote again for a larger car.

Try for a Toyota Innova, if you work on an average of 300km per day at 7 rupees it works out at around 2,100 rupees per day. Multiply that by the no. of days and you have a rough idea of how much to spend by converting your rupees back into euros. The Innova is the most comfortable vehicle for 4 people travelling - even better than Qualis.

Maddie,

I went back and forth with the Thakur fellow and his price changed FOUR times ... my itinerary did not change at all, nor did my car request. You should also note that he quoted me 380 Euro for just NINE days. I know others have had good experience with him, but I'm wary of someone whose price changes with every e-mail! Just wanted to share that with you.

ok thanks for that....thought I was on to a good thing. I am not surprised hearing that though...isn't that what to expect in India? Hopefully he is a bit more reliable.
thanks

Scarlett and Maddie - If the Thakur fellow's price kept changing and it got lower each time, it means he has certainly charged for too high a price with you in the first place. This is fairly common in India - and VERY ANNOYING because we are used to a fixed price in many countries.
