Looks good, well spaced, I'm guessing the Jaisalmer flight will have to be booked early, as well as the train to Ajmer.
You have the option of moving Agra around in the Itinerary, either: - ...Jaipur, car to Agra (via Fathepur Sikri), then overnight train to Varanasi. or ...Varanasi, overnight train to Agra, then to Delhi from Agra.

Jaisalmer flights are being operated by Indian Airlines - usually using their offshoot, Alliance, but make enquiry direct to Indian and yes, try to book as early as poss. I don't know if bookings are open yet, but imagine they should be.
Nice itinerary - there is also the night train to Jodhpur from Jaisalmer, leaving at 11.15 p.m. and gets in very early morning around 6 a.m. You will be sleeping the night in Jodhpur if you take the 4 p.m. train - arrives there around 10.15 P.M. I don't like the night train because you just get to sleep and then it seems you wake up again too early! However if you are young, you can cope!!

You don't want to have one more day in Delhi? Otherwise your trip sounds good, not too rushed, but I just wonder if another day in Delhi might allow you to soak up some more of the sights here.

I've been to all those places except Varanasi. For my own tastes, I'd say that both beautiful Jaisalmer and Delhi need another day at least to savour them. Many nice things in Delhi, not the horror we'd been led to expect. If I had to cut time anywhere from your schedule , it'd be a day from Jodhpur. Apart from the splendid citadel and views from it, it seemed depressingly poor, struggling and squalid & with such bad air pollution that it triggered my latent asthma. Also maybe cut a day from Pushkar.

I would slot in Agra between Jaipur andVvaranasi. The overnight train Agra - Varanasi is fit for this purpose and it cuts down on flying.

I would squeeze out two days from the rest of your trip and add them to Delhi. The rest looks good.

Hi Jason - did you do the trip yet? If so, what do you recommend to do, and what to leave out in this itinerary? We are contemplating a trip in march 08, so just wanted your feedback.

I would spend only one day in Jodhpur - see the citadel definitely - and use the other day for more time in Jaipur, maybe seeing nearby Amber Palace.

Hi SilverMaple - hello from sunny Los Angeles. Thanks for your quick response. I saw your posts on Rajasthan. If I were 'forced' (for time limitations) to choose between Jaipur and Jaisalmer, what would you recommend? I know they must both be beautiful, but if you were to pick only one place - which would you have, based on your experience? Thanks so much.

Just for updating - flights direct Delhi - Jaisalmer by Indian Airlines are cancelled. Other threads have details re Kingfisher, there is a flight daily to Jodhpur from Delhi operated by Indian and Jet. Kingfisher is not going directly to Jaisalmer but is flying in from Jaipur.

Jaisalmer is really special - clean crisp air (Jodhpur is extremely polluted), desert landscape, incredible fort and village, lovely people and a real outback/frontier type feel - big turbans, big moustaches, big scarves/big landscape. We stayed out of the fort at Fifu Guest house - very good. |
