It's an appalling state of affairs - and as the article suggests, corruption is behind it. Money changing hands between the accused and the law authorities. His guesthouse has been named - Pardeshi Guesthouse, sometimes known as Nayan Palace - and best to avoid it like the plague, I should think.

Remember the son of the Orissa cop who was paroled from a Rajasthani jail after being sentenced for rape.. Mohanty?

(Edit: Maybe that story went the typical Indian media way. Outrage, shrill voices, talking heads and 'send in SMS in support'... and then, move on to the next corpse, like vultures, without ending or updating the the last one)

Guys should either be blind, have no libido or just give no reaction.

I don't think I'm a prude but would like them to be covered in public place. With friends one can trust, one can be as naked as one wants to be. Another thing is drinking beyond one's limits. Especially if its a single women, not recommended. If at one's place/room then no issues.

I know this is going to get into whole lot of flaming & perhaps deservingly so, can't help it, I feel as I feel.

Maybe they should be given the castration drug!

Women have a right to wear what they want without the fear of being molested. Off course when people go to other people's country then you have to do what the romans do so to speak - and respect the culture and tradition of the place.

India is pretty traditional which is ok, but even when women are dressed conservatively some men 'try it on'. I have found being strict and assertive works. Also pushing groping hands away firmly is effective.

Something in the news about a rape of a tourist in Udaipur

Police in India have arrested a rapist who went missing after he was released on bail three months into his sentence for attacking a British woman.

Parbat Singh was arrested in the state of Gujarat and is being brought to Rajasthan, police said.

Singh raped the woman, who cannot be named, at his guesthouse in Udaipur in northern India in 2007.

He was convicted and sentenced to 21 years in prison but released by police in July 2008 when he lodged an appeal.

"Yes, he has been arrested from Gujarat and we are bringing him to Udaipur," superintendent of police, Udaipur, Sajeev Narjari, told the BBC.

Singh's victim was a freelance journalist from London.

He was given his sentence for rape and forced entry after a trial in April 2008, and fined 25,000 rupees ($625; £312).

He was released on bail, even though rape defendants are not allowed bail under Indian law.

Extraordinary that someone who has been convicted of rape should be released on bail ... when he lodged an appeal. I remember reading that his family put up a large sum of cash. I thought it incredible that such corruption could exist so good to see that justice if finally being done ... we hope.

Good to see that some police at least are not only corruption resistant but are competent enough to track this man down and bring him back to face justice.

Just read this piece n I am seriously scared. I am traveling to Udaipur this month (around 14th - 15th) and I will be on my own for the 2 days trip.

Can someone suggest me a nice, reasonable and safe hotel (in downtown area). Though this will be a business trip but I do plan to do some sightseeing. Can I hire a car or an auto and be safe especially after it gets dark (say around 7 - 8 pm)?

7 - 8 PM udaipur is fully lit. Dont worry. Udaipur goes to sleep by around 10.30 types depending on the cold wave.

Yes, you can hire a cab or auto and you will be absolutely safe if you dont go to dark alleys and to a secluded place.

Try and wind up all your tours and trips before 9 PM.

Barkha - whilst this post seems 'alarmist' this sort of thing is most unlikely to happen anywhere, if you lock your room at night and don't let anyone in!! Udaipur seems to me one of the safest places to walk around, similar to Jaisalmer. Just use commonsense as a single woman might in any country, and I am sure nothing will happen to you.

There was a thread about this previously, I will see if I can find it and merge the lot together. Later - found it, now we have a full history of it all!

Let not one stray incident sensationalise the issue and let that one stray incident not cloud anyone's judgement about the place or this country.

We are a civilised nation and such incidents can happen in any part of the world.

Of course, in this process, let us remember that that one stray incident is THE INCIDENT for the victim and let us symapthise with the victim for having undergone such a traumatic moment in her life.

I pray to GOD to please stop such and any violence against women for ever.

Barkha you shouldn't worry. Udaipur is an extraordinary place. I swear it is good for the soul!
I was there on my own for a week in August. I stayed at the Jaiwana at 14 Lal Ghat. It was perfect for me. Mehwar hotel is opposite and also lovely.

Have an amazing time!
