Female tourists abused in Rajasthan

What has happeend in Udaipur,i saw it tonight on IBN7 news channel, a foreign tourist got raped by some hotelier . Is it Udaipur now After Jaipur,(Alwar),Jodhpur and Pushkar?

Did the young folks really beat the japanese lady in Pushkar , is it true that the priest from one of the temples try to molest her before.
Is rajasthan really becoming unsafe for travellers everyday? what is happening to the calm and quite people of Rajasthan?
Ashamed of these happenings.

Checking Google News for "Rajasthan" yields some results. E.g. (first hit),

I'm betting this will be in the Hindustan Times tomorrow. They've been running thier "Mumbai Outraged" series after the multiple molestations around India during new years and the murder of the young tribal girl. BIG questioning of modern Indian male values and the mistreatment of women with the underlying class frustrations...etc. I'm hoping there are just more reports lately becuase ladies are starting to report more often rather than just getting angry.

Thanks for links, Machadinha - I saw part of the Pushkar story on TV last night but didn't know about the others. It is awful, and I see in one of the links the Australian High Commission has issued an advisory for single women not to be in deserted places by themselves or out at night in unpopulated areas. Which makes a lot of sense. The fact that these things are happening in Rajasthan is not good for the good 'name' of the State unfortunately. But one must put these things into perspective - this is not a crime peculiar to India. I am sure things haven't changed back in NZ or Oz where daily one reads of rape cases before the courts and I'm sure this is the same in USA or UK and many other countries around the world.
A rape-free, molestation of women-free world would be wonderful but unfortunately it doesn't seem possible. What is good is that women are now filing FIR's and being more vocal about these horrendous incidents so the public is more aware of the perpetrators.

What I've (half-heartedly) looked for and can't seem to find are the reported rapes or sexual assaults of tourists in Britain compared to India, and some kind of analysis that works out the relative likelihood of each. Too much to ask for, I suppose. It would be interesting though, I think.

I don't know, I feel low when I read stuff like this, but also feel low when I see women going around bare-chested as they do in Goa beach. Of course its their right to do as they please but wouldn't it be better to do that kind of thing in a private place, on a private beach. Guys should either be blind, have no libido or just give no reaction.

I don't think I'm a prude but would like them to be covered in public place. With friends one can trust, one can be as naked as one wants to be. Another thing is drinking beyond one's limits. Especially if its a single women, not recommended. If at one's place/room then no issues.

I know this is going to get into whole lot of flaming & perhaps deservingly so, can't help it, I feel as I feel.

Karuna - yes, there is a point to 'tourists' being raped as against rape per se within a country. I do know of incidences of some rape cases of tourists in Australia - in Blue Mountains area and also on some isolated beaches. If you narrow it down to 'tourists' then nos. would be less.

This story (and the increasing statistics in Rajasthan) has hit one or two news channels in India today, with tourism officials making the usual comments.

Rape is rape, no matter if it is citizen on citizen, or tourist on citizen, citizen on tourist, or tourist on tourist. These latest statistics show India is indeed up there in the number of cases that are reported. But if you look at the per capita results on the same website - the results are quite low, a blip on the screen if you will. In India the 'scared factor' is usally enough to deter a citizen from raping a tourist .... but that fear might become less of a factor as tourists party, dress, & become more socially interactive with locals (anywhere in the world). I really think that alot of these tourist cases, worldwide, are propagated by alcohol & drugs ..... along with the poor decisions that go with. No matter where you are in the world you must stay alert and use your common sense at all times!

Jivan, frankly that sounds like you are saying that you, and other men, should not be responsible for controlling their own sexuality.

We are responsible.

End of story.

Why should women cover themselves,I think it is more a question for men to control their impluses. The whole concept of some women covered completely, so that they wont tempt men, is wrong. After all women dont go around abusing men just because they are not covered.

Peak, of course rape is rape, my comment was in response to Aishah's saying "this [referring to the rape of tourists] is not a crime peculiar to India".

Of course rape is not peculiar to any country, but it would be interesting I think (especially in dicussing the hot topic of the safety of women travellers in India), to know the relative numbers of reported rapes of tourists in India and elsewhere.

The Canadian Girls in Kerala

Does anyone know which resort in Kumarakom the Canadian girls were molested at? I just read the headline today and having just been to that area I am curious. Parents probably did not think there would be a problem as their girls were together.

http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/2...ow/2690447.cms

Men should control themselves and be held responsible for their actions anywhere. To me, as a tourist to a new place, you have to use your "street smarts". I don't blame women for going topless or having a few drinks but if you draw attention to yourself by doing something unusual or outlandish for that place, as a tourist, then you may attract the wrong attention. The attention of pickpockets or worse. That can go for men as well as women but women tend to be more vulnerable. The world is a big place and not everywhere you go on vacation is 100% salfe, keep your eyes open to what is going on around you and keep some of the money hidden in your shoe, bra, or wherever! A big city in one place should be regarded with as much caution as a big city someplace else. Respect local customs. Always watch your back when out at night. I may sound paranoid but I have not yet experienced problems.
