Thats like $100 Aus per person not including drinks.... (i was told it would cost roughly $40 per person).... hmm maybe one of the hotels overlooking the lake would be better.(and they still havent replied to my email - what makes saragat so special ) |

i had dinner there - it was no great shakes (as i said before). and there wasn't much you could see in the dark. big groups of noisy tourists for company. far better (if you must) would be to go for lunch during the day (if it's on offer).

Had dinner there years ago. The food in the upper-class restaurant was the least remarkable of all the palaces I ate at. Moreover, when I was there (1999) the more expensive restaurant (not the pontoon) had no views on the lake ! Whereas the cheaper restaurant, where you have to stand in line to get buffet food, has the gorgeous views. I would definitely recommend that you go for that option, as I think a visit is really worth it. The view on the palace and the ghats is breathtaking, one of my all-time favorites, especially at sunset. And make sure you stroll all the way to the tiny swimming pool, nicest panorama from there.
Also, I wouldn't worry about the dress code. A friend I took there was in basic traveller's attire, and had no problem. What it means, I think, is no shorts, clean shirts, and some semblance of shoes. Enjoy ! |

I would recommend the buffet lunch - for the atmosphere, not the food. I was there in Jan 1994 and paid Rs 300 (about $10 US) at that time. My least enjoyable food in India that visit but the best atmosphere of any restaurant I have ever been too! The food was too similar to Indian food in the US
We went right at the moment it opened for lunch (12 noon I believe) and we were the first guests and had the best seats and the restaurant to ourselves for the first part of the meal. |

The lake has water this year at least. The entertainment is probably still in the evening..

Unfortunately the buffet is now 3000 rps.
So $100 Aus. So out of my budget. |

alternatively, the city palace?
i was just reading in "1,000 places to see before you die" (i'd better get moving!) about the shiv niwas hotel, the sister palace, in the city, of the lake palace. it's "spacious accommodations with views of the lake once welcomed[list of famous people]... ."
it doesn't say whether they have a restaurant. if they do, perhaps it overlooks the lake as well. you could gaze across to the lake palace, which might be even more romantic and mesmerizing than being at the lake palace itself. looks like the website is the same as the one the captain provided for the lake palace: www.tajhotels.com.

In the end, we cancelled the reservation. We realized that was too expensive to have dinner for 50€ each. At end of August there was water in the lake.

I would recomend going for lunch because you can see the palace in daylight. You can only get on the boat to the palace if you have pre-booked, (and paid), but the arrival and entry are part of the magic. Even though floodlit, the night arrival is not so spectacular. I have usually gone for the Indian buffet lunch, which is of a very high standard.
