Desperately seeking hotel in Jaipur

Hi all. Me again. Thanks for your patience.

Trying to figure out the first bit of our trip to Rajasthan. Our no. 1 choice for Jaipur, Samode Haveli, is fully booked (absolutely gutted and may never recover!!). Having trawled through the hotel reviews here on IM, and looked (again) at my 2 guide books, and having phoned a few places, I still don't really know what I'm doing so hope you will take pity on a newbie.

Can anyone suggest a decent alternative to Samode Haveli that won't cost a small fortune? Jas Vilas was charming & delightful on the phone - and available - but we were hoping for a grander heritage/palace/haveli type of building to stay in (ideally central & with clean pool). Alsisar Haveli is full the first 2 nights of our stay. Madhuban not answering phone.

Any opinions out there? This will be our first stop on our first trip to India and it's also our honeymoon, so we don't want to take a chance at that point. I'm a bit thrown that places are fully booked 2 weeks in advance in supposedly low season!

thanks muchly Sarah

try Diggis Palace

2 years ago I've stayed in the Narayan Niwas Hoteland paid 2000 Rupees for a gorgeous double room.

Look at Jas Vilas: http://jasvilas.com/. We stayed there a couple of years ago and loved it. Do not know if it is available or whether it is the price range you are looking at - but if those things fit, I would recommend it unequivocally.

If you search on IM, you'll find similar recommendations from others on IM who have stayed there. Although I haven't seen her on IM lately, but Lily (one of the owners) used to be very active on IM.

Good luck with your trip.

Try the Maharajah suite in Hotel Raj Mahal. It is perhaps the grandest room in Jaipur and not too expensive either!

Alsisar Haveli (very good) or Narayan Niwas Palace.

What do you mean it's gutted and may never recover? Is this true?

She may have meant that she's gutted and may never recover.

the obvious alternative would be samode palace. both the samode properties seem ridiculously overpriced to me (200 to 450 euros a night) but then, it is your honeymoon...

for those looking for a 'normal' stay in jaipur, hotel arya niwas comes highly recommended - perfectly located, clean large rooms, friendly staff, good food and reasonably (low) priced.

If youre looking for a stay in the Rajasthani-architecture kind of a heritage property, then after Samode and Alsisar, your options devolve to Mandawa and Narain Niwas. Raj Mahal as its more British era. Id say forget the architecture and stay in a good value for money place like Jas Vilas (even tho Lily's been gracious enough to recommend Raj Mahal) or Megh Niwas or Loharu House, then go and splurge on a dinner at Rambagh.
