Hi Kruska, I had been to deshnok in oct 2006 with my wife, It is not a scary place all but you to love animals to be with them and walk along with them. First thing - the preists give you the prasad which the rats eat first. I dont know your reaction to this. Second - Never lift your legs and walk around the temple instead slide your legs along the floor and move, they say if your stamp on a rat and kill or injure, it is a bad sign and you have to make a statue of a rat in silver and present it to the temple. Overall it is a very place to visit.

Hi Kruska, We visited the Desnok temple and found it really fascinating. Plenty of well fed rats all over the temple compound. They did not seem to go outside the temple confines. Inside the temple the rats didn't bother you but it seemed a good idea to shuffle along rather than risk stepping on one. India has many unusual sights and this is definitley one ! Our guide in the temple explained why the rats are in the temple. There is a good reason for this rather than it being just random. Recommed a visit !

Just curious, have there ever been cases of rabies or any other diseases there that rats carry.

I have made fleeting visits to the temple twice; in October 2005 and August 2006. In the second visit, there appeared to be fewer rats than the previous year, and also the rats appeared to be considerably sick/ill, with few of them not moving at all. The prasad is kept on the floor next to the priests and has few rats nibbling away. I have never been able to get myself to eat it.
