When you are in Delhi you should check out the daily newspapers - Hindustan Times, Times of India - towards the front pages there is usually a list of entertainments and concerts. Enquire at your hotel about this, and if there's something catching you eye they should be able to help you get to it - arrange car, auto rickshaw etc. Be sure to have your transport back included in the arrangement.
Jaisalmer and Jodhpur Forts both have itinerant musicians hanging about playing. Also Pushkar. Jaipur I think has the same sort of thing like Delhi i.e. advertising in paper for concerts. Again ask your hotel people to help you. Others may have more ideas for you.

October 2008 Festivals?

I'm looking towards October 2008 as a possible time to visit Rajasthan, when the heat may be more manageable (please disabuse me of this notion if I'm wrong!), the airfares are still reasonable for the US/India long-haul, and the trip could coincide with a festival or two.

I found the list below online, and would welcome comments on its accuracy (every site/person seems to offer different dates!), the relative extent to which each might be celebrated in Rajasthan, and which might be the most fun for a visitor. I can be there only for about 2 weeks.

Also, what does it mean that Durga Puja "begins" on October 6? How long does it last? What is the progression of the puja over the ensuing days?

Monday, October 06: Durga Puja begins (Maha Saptami)
Thursday, October 09: Dussehra / Vijay Dashami
Tuesday, October 14: Lakshmi Puja
Saturday, October 18: Karva Chauth
Sunday, October 26: Dhanteras
Tuesday, October 28: Diwali (The festival of lights)
Thursday, October 30: Bhai Dooj

(I also note that the 2008 Rajasthan International Folk festival will take place at Mehrangarh Fort in Jodhpur from October 10-14.)

Thanks!

Not the one to detail this but in lieu of the authority, my spouse, I will point out that Durga Puja can take place over 10 days. Note that this a Bengali festival by and large so in Rajasthan it will likely be a matter of different associations putting it on on different days as it is in LA. In Pune it was a grand event and in Hyderabad not bad at all. You get 2 Bengalis you get 3 associations is what my spouse says. You need to find a Bengali there to get the info..

Tacita - Diwali is not to be missed unless you are averse to fireworks! It is very pretty with all the lights on the rooftops. The only problem will be in some touristy places particularly Jaisalmer, room rates can be increased. Should be fine for Jaipur, Bundi, Jodhpur, Bikaner though because not such a huge influx of Indian tourists there.

For Jaisalmer, sometimes the Fort hotels may keep their normal rates, because not so many Indian tourists stay there - they prefer outside the Fort.
