Cost for Car/Driver in Rajasthan

Can anyone help give an approximation of how much it should cost to hire a car and driver based on the following:
-Car/Driver needed for 9 or 10 days
-Starting in Jaipur with stops in Pushkar, Bundi, Chittorgarh, Udaipur, Ranakpur/Kumbalgarh, Jodhpur and end in Jaisalmer

We don't need the driver to drive us back to Jaipur, but does anyone know if we still have to pay the return journey for the driver to get back to Jaipur?

We'll need a car that can fit 3 passengers (not including the driver) and their luggage - prob not more than 3 travel rucksacks.

Any help is much appreciated. Thanks!

You have to pay min 250 km per day. Rate per km depends on the type of car. Yes you have to pay for the empty run back to Jaipur if not covered by the min km guarantee. For 3 persons, a Tata Indica should be enough. Rate should be around Rs 6 per km for car with A/C. No point ending in Jaisalmer.

I'd have said an Indica's a little small for three plus luggage- the boot...trunk...back...isn't very big. If you're on a budget it will do, but if you're tall you'll want more room- Ambassador/Indigo might be better.

Check what the rate includes (tolls, driver's expenses etc).

Did a road trip in May of '06, circle route from and to Varanasi, included Khajuraho, Orrcha, Agra, Mathura, ten days in all.

My deal, arranged by my guesthouse owner, was this: Minimum of 200km/day, paid Rs5/km, paid for gas, paid for one border crossing, about Rs450, paid driver @ Rs150/day. Car was a non-AC Ambassador which could be tight for three unless all baggage is in trunk; AC Ambassador will cost more; I went in May and AC was missed.

I agree, Karuna, an Indica for 3 people plus luggage would not be too roomy. You should be able to hire a Toyota Innova for around 7rupees per km, and this is very comfortable. I did this with 2 friends last Feb. and it was nice and roomy, held the road smoothly (some of the jeep-like vehicles I find can be a bit bouncy).

Anyone have any suggestions or recommendations on a good, reliable travel agent or car hiring service in Jaipur? I'm going to talk to my guesthouse tonight about what they can offer in terms of car hire, but I'd like to maybe shop around to find the best deal in case the guesthouse asks for something outrageous. Thanks!

Rajasthan Four Wheel Drive, aka Four Wheel Drive India, operate out of Jaipur and if you search around someone here wrote a very favourable review of their services a few months back.
