Thanks for the info Casey and Karuna

Julesa, what did you find painful? Was it the constant bouncing? or did you have to use muscles that you don't normally use. I must admit, the idea of chaffing my inner thighs on a camel isn't particularly inviting

yes. the bouncing and use of muscles. it is not a passive activity, i found it very strenuous and i was very sore after only 15 mins.

some people on the other hand appear to have no problems.

Casey, antisense said he was going to do his safari for New Year - after Jan. 4th all Indian tourists will have left and yes, January is very quiet after that date.. I am giving the info because Christmas - Jan 3 nights are highly populated out there in Jaisalmer!

Aishar,

Could you recommend a good company to trek with? One that treats its' animals well and of course makes sure their clients have fun

I have heard that a Mr Bissa.. also known as Marlboro Man is good.

Can you recommend anyone in particular?

I think we will be spending around 3 or 4 days in Jaisalmer depending on what we can find to do.

Tanx !

If you are staying at a reputable place the people there can recommend or arrange a good safari for you. LP has some recommendations and these are still good - I think when posters are saying the Marlboro man they are meaning Mr Desert who has a shop near the Fort Gate in Gopa Chowk before you enter the Fort.

Should I do the camel safari thing in Osiyan, Bikaner or Jaisalmer? My travel partner insist that we go to the Camel Festival in Bikaner - so we'll be around the area 19th - 21st Jan 08.

With those dates it wouldn't matter where you do your safari - it is well after the New Year rush, and you can have safaris here that are well away from any crowded touristy routes. So entirely up to you where you would like to do it, and where it fits best into your itinerary. The weather btw is perfect at that time.

Hello,
Where ever you select to do the camel track , it maybe Bikaner or Jaislmer ,please make sure that they have enough, water, food, matchsticks, Mattress for the floor and clean sheets and blankets for all and above everything the camel's mouths tied up, it is mateing time for camels in winters and they are very aggressive.

I was in Bikaner for 15 days last November and was invited back to the Camel Festival where I spent another 4 days that time. Most of my time was spent around camels and it’s very true that they are in rut in the winter and could get aggressive, but I did not see any that were aggressive. Also it can get very cold there in the winter and I about froze one night with only a light jacket.

We took a jeep out a few times to meet up with one of the camel safaris to drop off supplies and have dinner with them, but I did not go no the safari myself as I have a camel here in the States that I take out camping often anyway.

In the winter the days are cool and pleasant but the nights can get very cold, in the summer the days can be too hot but the nights are beautiful.

Have fun!!

thanks all - we NEVER made it to the dessert - a shame indeed as neither could get the time off from work.

i'm planning a trip this coming December. LOVE India to bits! Who would have thought I'll do it twice in the same year!!!

for novices (like me, not so long ago) ... relax. don't over plan (like i did). it's a wonderful place and very easy to travel. people are so helpful and gracious.
