Camel Safari Reccomendations Jaisalmer
I am really looking forward to the much talked about Camel Safari with my girlfriend for 2-3 nights around New Years Eve. I have read previous threads and feeling a little worried about falling victim to a tour with bad operator or been taken to an over populated and polluted destination. I would love to join a camel safari that takes us slightly off the beaten track. I am not so budget conscious with the camel safari and would really just love a fun and memorable experience. Any recommendation would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks Alex |

We stayed at the Shahi Palace and went on a one day tour. They do have overnights as well. We did not see anyone else when we went. I heard great things from everyone who went on the longer tours. I would recommend both staying there and taking the tour through them. I think they are also listed in the hotel section on IM.

I took the tour through Fifu guest house. They have a "resort" in Puri (do I have the name right?!). My girlfriend and I were pretty hapopy with the very short safari we took. We had some other friends in town and compared prices and found Fifu competitive without bargaining.
They brag about their French tents which we though was funny. That is, till we tried them and discovered now good they really were. Really nice windows. You can read my review of Fifu guest house in the hotel section (or look up their travel guide reviews). Fifu has the guest house outside of town (where I stayed) something in the fort and the Puri resort.

I took my three day camel trip from Khuri. Having nothing to compare it to (except a reeeeally bad camel trek in Pakistan) I can only say that the drivers, the camels and the food provided were very good. No problems. And Khuri itself is a great place. I booked my trip at Mama's in Khuri; the family who ran the place were really wonderful people.

how about bikaner?
i don't know how committed you are to doing your safari in jaisalmer, or how flexible your itinerary is, but i've read both here and in guidebooks that the safaris that leave from bikaner are less heavily touristed. i believe there's a thread on the site somewhere referencing, in particular, those offered by "the camel man." but others here will know more.

I can tell you that over Christmas and New Year, the desert in Jaisalmer will be packed out mainly with Indian tourists staying in 'resorts' both in Sam and Khuri. You should be very careful with whom you book here to make sure you are going to a non-touristy area in either place. There is only a limited area where tourists are allowed because of Border security, and my guess is that this is the time when even non-touristy areas could be 'populated'! As someone else has suggested I think Bikaner will be the place for peace and quiet.

We were there in January and did not come across any other tourists on our safari. We booked it with the guesthouse that we stayed at, The Shahi Palace.

We were in Khuri on around the 19th/20th December and we were the only tourists staying in our little camp. The whole area was really quiet.
In contrast, we were hassled in Bikaner by Vino, a camel tour operator who Rough Guides warn against using. |

we did an overnight one, and that was about as much as we could take. i found it verging on painful. |
