Bundi to Jaipur

I know that one can go from Bundi to Jaipur by first going by bus to Kota and then by train for about four hours.... but how feasible is it to avoid that Kota leg and go by bus through Tonk and Deoli? This looks a lot shorter and more direct on the map, but would it be shorter (in time) in the "real" world? Has anybody ever done this leg (and lived to tell the tale)?

Thanks for all replies!

Thanks, Tonylittle. Which of the two towns would you choose to break your journey in -- Deoli or Tonk? Doing the whole thing in one go would mean that we's arrive in Jaipur after dark; I think it might be nicer to arrive sometime mid-morning!

Jarman,

You will probably do well to proced to Jaipur directly, but if you must break journey, it has to be Tonk. And if you do stay in Tonk, take a look at the Sunehri Kothi. Beautiful interiors.

Thanks to both of you, as you have now made my decision for me. We will not return to Kota, but stay in Bundi for the evening, somewhere near the bus terminal, then, the following day, catch the 0630 bus direct to Jaipur.

This gets rid of all backtracking, allows extra time in Bundi, and gets us to Jaipur an hour earlier than the morning train from Kota. Great!

In addition, I think someone on another thread told me that Bundi has better budget accommodation than Kota. So, all is looking great!

If either of you (or anyone) has any ideas for a good BUDGET hotel/haveli near the bust terminal in Bundi, I'd love to hear about it. Also, is the bus likely to be over-packed, so that to get on at 0630, we need to be in the queue at 0530?

Thanks again for helping me plan this part of my trip so successfully!

Hi, again, tonylittle!

Our budget is pretty small -- we're hoping we can keep above dormitory level, but at present we are looking for rooms about 400 - 500 rupees a night, which (I hope) is not too unrealistic. I guess when we get to Mumbai we will have to put up with something higher than that unless we're willing to share with the rats and cockroaches, but is this a fair figure for most of the major towns?
If you can't reply because of the site closure, you can reach me directly on jarman_ah@yahoo.com.au. Thanks for all your help so far!
Alan.

Hi
Last year we stayed at Ishwari Niwas, not far from the bus station which was great for the early bus. Its a lovely old court yard hotel, it was clean and the food was good, served in a beautiful dining room and reasonable cost. When we were there the place was not very full, I don't think people know about it which is a great shame. One downfall, becareful with the manager, he is a bit sharpe on prices on the tours, it was interesting because he claimed to be a member of the royal family, it was great to go through hidden doors in the palace. It was not expensive in comparison to UK tours but in India a little expensive. We must compliment to one armed waiter, he could open a bottle of kingfisher in seconds and found him very helpful. The cost of the rooms were 400 rupees, thats for a twin with onsuite bathroom, it was a massive room.

I hope this is helpful if you want anymore information about India, please contact me on tonylittle59@hotmail.com

have a great trip
Tony

Thanks, Tony! I will certainly be contacting you privately, as I need LOTS of help -- this is my first trip to India (probably my only trip, as I'm 62 and my backpacking days are numbered!) and the fulfilment of a lifelong ambition -- but, frankly, I hardly know where to start! It's been a great boon to have a forum such as this and people such as yourself to fall back on!

Virtually everywhere in Bundi is within a 5-10 minute rickshaw ride, so I advise you not to stay near the noisy bus station but go and stay in the lovely atmosperic "old town" it really is a step back in time!!
Check out the Hotel Listings for some ideas on places to stay up near the fort there are loads of great places to stay within your budget.Check out the Baoris or step wells in Bundi, really worth seeing.
If you stay in the old town be sure to try a lassi at the Sathi lassi stall one of the best I've had in India!!

Happy Traveling!!
