Bhangarh - The Haunted Town in Rajsthan

We made a terrific find in Alwar province about 15 km from the village of Ajabgarh in the Aravalli hills. It is a deserted city which doesn't appear in any of the guide books I have read, called Bangarh. The city is largely but is well maintained with paved paths and grassed open areas. Among the impressive remains are a huge fort, two temples, water tanks, a row of half built houses and other buildings we didn't have time to see. Only a few locals visited while we were there. We found it because it is close to a luxury hotel (the only one in the area) called Amanbagh - check their website for location. Phot of the fort attached.

Incidentally the little village of Ajabgarh also has a large fort, temple, huge wall and gate plus several chaatris.

I would be interested to hear whether others have visited and why it isn't in any of the guides books.

Bhanghar

We found this place because it is only 15 km from the luxury hotel of Amanbagh where we stayed. It is only accessible by car and though it is in Alwar province, it is a long way from Alwar town. In fact, as the crow flies, I guess it about halfway between Alwar and Jaipur but some miles off the main road. The village of Ajabgarh is near the Amanbagh hotel and is marked on the NH11A road at MapmyIndia (search for Dausa then magnify the map and follow the NH11A North and you will see Ajabgarh marked.

See http://mapmyindia.com/

Well worth the trip. Good luck

I too made a trip to Bhangarh couple of months back…was in search for a infrequent weekend drive/destination from Delhi and came across the stories of Bhangarh…was very unsure of the place initially albeit it was a good decision and made it with one friend. Truly a terrific find...

Bhangarh is listed in my Lonely Planet Rajasthan oct 2008 edition. Nonetheless it is good to hear from people who have been to these off-beaten-track places, it sounds like it is very good. I may consider it as a day excursion from Jaipur in my short Rajasthan trip this August.

Rajasthan has dozens of such places. I have come across several on my drives off the main highways. Will have to search my logbook for some names though. Get James Todd's 'Annals and Antiquities of Rajasthan'. You will find many mentions alongside the interesting anecdotes.
Alone I walked. Strangers joined in. We became a caravan.

See an earlier post from me at http://www.indiamike.com/india/rajas...ovince-t53186/

The stories about spirits etc are probably apocryphyal. The site was open with no sign of locked gates or wardens when we were there but I wouldn't see much point in going there after dark anyway.

It is a marvelous place with only a small part of it restored. Locals use the huge water tanks for washing clothes there and the restored area is very neat and tidy. It is one of the most impressive abandoned towns I have seen in India. The temples and huge fort are particularly impressive as is the street of houses leading up to it and swarming with monkeys. From the fort you can see hundreds of hectares of ruins. Well worth a visit
