I ate a curry made of ripe guavas at a friend's home in Kota. I was a bit unsure when I heard of this dish, but I was quite surprised when I liked it. Not 'Anthony Bourdain' league, but definitely unusual.

being a Rajasthani, I have the pleasure of having some of the best of the league stuff at home itself.
However outside my home, it was in a dharamshala near Salasar Balaji Temple, Rs.25 for unlimited food. More than the taste it was the hospitality that flattered me. Also most of the things that I have picked on the roadside, like kachoris, Mirch vadas, Samosas etc, have been really very good. |

My favourite Rajasthani food is very mundane - it's bajra roti (roti made with millet flour). It's mainly made in winter months because it's considered heatening, but I could eat it all year round.
I find the mutton (goats' meat) is too hot for my taste - so I always have to ask for less red chilli when we have that one.

Are you going to do a 'home cooking, Rajasthani food' tour, ashwinnaagar? Some restaurants do similar to home cooking style here - Chandan Shri in Hanuman Chowk, Kanishka Garden Restaurant not far from the government hospital, Maruduhar (not sure how to spell that) is a cheap restaurant near the railway station and near Gadi Sagar Pol market as well, and that is certainly Rajathani style. Near the roundabout for the Barmer Rd turnoff is a Bishnoi dhaba - bajra roti, dahl, and subzee are all very much 'home style'. I believe there are also some homestay guest houses for which the Tourist Reception keeps a list - the office is on Station Road as you come into the city to your right side. For sure, home cooking there!
(This is all for Jaisalmer) |

Also if you like Kachoris and you happen to find yourself in Kota, park yourself at 'Jai Jinendra' for the best Kachoris ever!
