Best place in Rajasthan for 1000 rupees?
Best place in Rajasthan for 1000 rupees?
Hi
I'm planning 3 weeks in Rajasthan in July/August, 2 weeks getting around as many places as I can, and a week sitting still and reading and writing. I'd love to get suggestions for a really nice place to get some peace and quiet for a week.
Is there a town that's more relaxing than the others? I'm expecting it to be pretty intense, from experience of other touristy areas in north India...
Should I head to Mount Abu, or somewhere like that? It'll be bloody hot won't it?
Is there a nice hotel or Haveli where I can do some thinking and writing, where there might be a desk in the room and a view from the window? Around 1000 rupees is my budget.
After this I'm planning to go to Almora or Papparsali for three weeks, so recommendations for that are welcome too!
Grateful for any advice...
Gareth

That's a good, though tad long wishlist for Rajasthan. Abu is likely to be the only place in those months which wont be hot. It's the only hill station of the state. Actually most of South Rajasthan will be moderate temperatures and humid weather. In Mount Abu my choice is Seth Raghunath Das Parihar Inn (http://www.srpinn.com/profile.htm) - very clean rooms, not a heritage hotel or something with a view but very livable if you're into doing your own thing quietly. The staff will leave you alone as well if you so wish. And it's half your budget. You may want to check out Udaipur as well for the haveli wish but that's a far more touristy place.
Thanks for that, might try that inn.
Shame to only get one reply though. If ask a simpler question though, maybe I'll get more bites...
So, Bundi, Mount Abu, or somewhere in Shekhawati? What do people think will be the best place to chill out?

Mt. Abu by head and shoulders if you want peace and do some serious reading and writing. Other option is Ranakpur. I enjoyed Bundi, and there are some very lovely places to stay within that budget. I found that while the temples in Mt. Abu were nice, the town itself was not among my favorites in Rajasthan. It was quite crowded with Indian newlyweds and the lake was quite unpleasant and dirty. I met several other people who were disappointed as well. This may, however, have been limited to the year I was there (the lake situation, not the newlyweds) and the time of year. That being said, the heat factor may make Abu a better choice. I spend a sweltering May in Udaipur due to poor planning, but managed because I would go out in the mornings and evenings and relax during the day. The prices were quite low as it was not tourist season, and I really do like Udaipur, but there is something missing when there are cows and cricket games in the lake.
Thanks Casey and Nycank,
On the basis of your advice I'll see how it goes - if the heat's too much I'll head up to Mt Abu, and if Udaipur (or anywhere else on the way) makes me feel at home I'll sit still for a bit.
Ranakpur looks like a good spot to do some thinking too.
As ever, too many places...

Mount Abu will be the coolest. Pushkar marginally cooler than many lower altitude places in Rajasthan with the lake/ monsoon/ wind effect. Most of Rajasthan humid, too warm and sweaty for comfort, especially the further west you go.
Every cloud has a silver lining!
Dont miss udaipur and kumbhalgarh,it will beautiful and green there. And cooler too, ofcourse compared to rest of rajasthan.Plus there's a lot to see. Kumbhalgarh would be THE place if you just want to relax, get a good view and spend time reading and writing.
I'm not sure if you'll get a heritage hotel, but you should get a good atmospheric haveli-homestay type place =,ask for off seson discounts.
