Bagore-ki-Haveli/Chokhi Dhani/Singhvi's Haveli

I'm trying to plan some evening activities for an upcoming trip to Rajasthan. I've read very positive things about the evening show at Bagore-ki-Haveli in Udaipur, so that's already on our itinerary. For anyone who's been to Chokhi Dhani (Jaipur), would you recommend it? From the description it sounds a little like the Polynesian Cultural Center here in Hawaii (on the off chance that any of you are familiar with that) - cheesy but fun. I should mention that the friend I'm travelling with is put off by things that are over-the-top commercial. Also, is the entertainment portion at Chokhi Dhani very similar to the show at Bagore-ki-Haveli, or would it be worthwhile to fit both in? Thank for any info you might have.

On an unrelated note, does anyone know if Singhvi's Haveli in Jodhpur has AC rooms? Thank you!

I found both fantastic. Chokhi Dhani is an excellent start for a tour through Rajasthan as it gets you into the mood. It's very touristy and the dance shows are of course a mock-up. Entertaining though. The food is delicious. If for nothing else I'd go there for the food as it is difficult to get those traditional thalis anywhere else. You can stay there, they've got good rooms, too. But i guess arriving at 7pm (opens at that time) and staying till late night is good enough if you already have alternative arrangements.

But you need private transportation. We came in a bus and had no means to go back since it's really far off.

The dance show in Bagore-ki-haveli was great, too. Would love to see it once again. Unlike the few dancing girls at chokhi dhani the dancers here are professionals. so the 9 brass pots one woman piles up on her head are not glued together (they are in chokhi dhani). But it depends on your expectations. When we went there i saw a lot of tourists who were extremely disappointed and one women actually fell asleep. this is because you watch all the bollywood crap and you think some hot item girl in flashy clothes jumps onto the stage. nothing like that. the dancers are very ordinary, not very pretty girls. their clothes are flashy but cheap and it is obvious that they are anything but rich. it's authentic and very honest, as dancers still range at the bottom of the entertainment industry and are not high in their social standing. it's good to know and accept that before sitting down on the floor mats in the courtyard of the haveli and watching the one-hour-show.

I'd go there again anytime, but you need to get your expectations right.

A trip to jaipur is incomplete if you dont visit chokhi dhani.

I have not been there but have heard from friends that the place is simply great.

Its added though in my travel list

transportation

Thank you both for your replies. It sounds like we should try to schedule in a trip to chokhi dhani. So if I'm understanding correctly, we'll probably need to hire a driver to take us (I don't think we want to deal with renting a car). Do you have a rough idea of what this will cost and whether it can be done without arranging it in advance? Thanks for your help.

Yes, having private transportation is essential. You need not rent a car or hire a cab. It's enough (and cheaper) to hire an auto rickshaw for the evening. Tell him he needs to wait to take you back to the city. Chokhi Dhani is about 18km from the city center. A rickshaw should be about 400 to 500 (because he'll have to wait for several hours). Besides, Chokhi Dhani openes at 7pm. You should go there as early as possible to have enough time to roam around.
