there is some work going on..I am not sure..but they are converting Narrow gauge lines to broad gauge in Rajasthan...

You might try out road transport..which would hardly be 4-6 hours..

The track between Ajmer and Chittaurgarh (on the way to Udaipur) is closed for gauge conversion, I'll just check to see when it's likely to re-open. (Soon I think)

A lot of people visit Ranakpur and/or Kumbalgarh whilst going between Udaipur & Jodhpur, but I think they normally do the whole section using a car and driver.

A car and driver isn't cheap, but if there are 3 or 4 people traveling together it would be a good option as your luggage can be kept in the car whilst you look around.

A couple of suggestions......

1, if you're traveling alone, or with one other person, ask other tourists if they're interested in the same journey and then you can share the cost of the car & driver, it seems that loads of tourists like this methed of traveling between Udaipur and Jodhpur.

2, consider just using the car & driver to visit Ranakpur/Kumbalgarh and then to take you to Falna train station (40 Kms from Ranakpur), one of the biggest costs of the Udaipur-Jodhpur section is that you have to pay the driver for the time (and costs) of getting back to Udaipur, if you only went to Falna you'd save a lot of money, there is also a well-timed train to Jodhpur from Falna.....

Train 9223 departs Falna daily at 16:30 and gets to Jodhpur at 20:05, the train starts it's journey in Ahmedabad, so should run on time.

2-tier air con = Rs 385
Sleeper Class = Rs 121 (not air con)

Yes you can visit ranakpur Jain temples on the way from Jodhpur to Udaipur. But buses don't stay for a long time for your visit to the temples so it is better for you to stay one night over there.
This place in middle of the Aravali mountains, very beautiful place without crowd and people, non polluted place.
There are some hotels but you can try hill view resort is really a good one between $ 25 to 35 USD with breakfast.
Another possibility is that after visiting this temple you can continue your trip to Udaipur by another bus.
Thanks.
Rajuindia.
